Let me start by saying that I have no first-hand knowledge of the attempted assassination of former President Trump. Neither am I advocating some grand conspiracy theory. I don’t think any of the teams that were protecting Trump in Pennsylvania or any of his other campaign stops were intentionally negligent.

So how did a single gunman with no real sniper training make an attempt that in Trump’s own words leaves little doubt as to how close this attempt was to being successful?

The Security Service has a tough job. I remember attending the 2005 Boy Scout Jamboree when President Bush addressed over 30,000 attendees. The perimeter was protected by armed soldiers positioned every 20 yards watching the surrounding woods. This was an Army base but security was tight. We as leaders had been warned that counter-snipers would not hesitate to take action on the source of any laser that painted the President. With boys 13–17 years old, this was a major concern for us leaders. At that age, you don’t fully understand the ramifications of your actions. We told the boys not to purchase such items on our pre-Jamboree tours and then watched at night…
