Upgrading to a 4K Camera — Is It Worth It?
I get it, you want to the best gear. So do I, but…
Since DSLRs started capturing video most photographers became hybrid artists, adding video to their game and vice-versa.
Now there’s a major shift happening in the camera world. Canon and others are committing to mirrorless cameras. Canon’s top full-frame mirrorless camera now shoots as high as 8k video. It doesn’t appear they’re going to push their DSLR line further which means they’re pushing new lenses that pair with their new camera units in order to achieve maximum optical performance. To be fair, they’ve made adapting their older lenses — even the ones meant for crop sensors — quite possible, which is a blessing. But nonetheless, Canon knows photo/video geeks love getting their hands on new gear.
Aside from ergonomics, less noise, more dynamic range, along with increased megapixels, one spec that definitely catches the video and hybrid shooter’s eye is resolution and the now seemingly 4K standard.
Honestly, try and buy a television that isn’t 4K — they’re hard to find. Whether we like it or not, 4K is now the standard for television and soon for every television production. More broadcasters will demand 4K. Streaming giants such as Netflix and Amazon have demanded it for years.
