According to Vagbhata, all diseases are caused by either suppression or forceful expulsion of natural urges.

There are two types of urges: Dharaniya Vega and adharaniya Vega means suppressible and unsurpassable urges respectively. Suppressible urges include jealousy, greed, fear, anger etc. Suppressible urges are restrictable activities, and one should refrain from engaging them in both physically and emotionally. Unsurpassable urges, on the other hand, are those that should not be suppressed and must be satisfied as soon as the body signals the need. Examples of unsurpassable urges are sneezing, urinating, sleeping, vomiting, hunger and thirst.

We will go over the effects of repressing a few unsurpassable urges to help you to understand the impact on the body.

According to Ayurveda, suppressing the adhovata or fart can cause abdominal pain, weakness, reduction in digestive ability, and heart disease. Suppressing Sakrt or faeces has all of the same effects of suppressing fart, including calf muscles cramps, runny nose, headache, and oppression in the heart region. Suppressing Mutra or urine has the same side effects as suppressing farts and faeces, as well as splitting pain all over the body, stone in the balder and pain in the bladder and groin region.

Suppression of sneezing can create headaches, weakness of sense organs, stiffness in the neck or even facial paralysis. Trisna or thirst suppression can lead to weakness, deafness, delusions and cardiac pain. Hunger suppression might result in tiredness, dizziness and stomach pain. Delusion, heaviness of head and eye, body ache and yawing can all result from suppressing the urge to sleep.

Suppression of cough can result in a rise in cough, hiccough, and, in certain cases, heart problems. Tear Suppression result in running nose, stiff neck, eye or heart or head pain.

Ayurveda also recommended taking some preventative measures to counteract the detrimental effects of the suppression of uncontrollable urges. The most significant approach alleviates the harmful effects of fart, faeces and urine suppression is, Abhayanga or body massage with oil, svedana or body steaming, vasti karma or enema. if there is an oppression in the movement of faeces and urine, special foods and medicated ghee or clarified butter are given as well.

To counteract the harmful effects of sneezing suppression, induce sneezing using medicated fumes, thikshna anjana or collyrium with high potency (clear nostril), snehakarma or oleation therapy and vata^ mitigating foods are used. Sneezing suppression is treated with cold water showers and cold food and drinks. oily, warm and limited quantity foods are given to offset the side effects of hunger suppression. Sleep and mild body massage can help with sleep deprivation.

Sleeping, listening pleasant stories and being in the company friends are all good way to counteract the harmful effects of repressing tears.

In our everyday hectic lives, we all ignore one or more basic call of the bodily calls, citing the excuse that ‘I was busy at the time and what will happen if I don’t do it now?”. The main issue is that this happens every now and again, it becomes our habit, for which we pay a high price later.

While Dharaniya Vega or suppressible urges, are those whose suppression not only provides us with peace of mind and a happy life, but is also very crucial in our spiritual development. Even though they are suppressible urges, they are in actuality, insuppressible urges that drives most people’s life. Take for instance, terrorism. Terrorism is founded on hatred for something. Remember, according to Vagbhata, anger is suppressible urge.

So continue to learn and live a joyful and righteous life.
