All about the Amygdala

I am following a 30 day neuroscience and mindfulness course by Dr. Karolien Notebaert entitled Unlocking Your Wise and Mindful Brain and am learning about the extremely complex entity known as the amygdala. We refer to the amygdala in the singular. There are however two of them one on either side of the brain and furthermore each of them is composed of multiple nuclei.

The name amygdala comes from Latin and means almond because the most prominent nucleus, the basal nucleus, is shaped like an almond. The other nuclei include: the accessory nucleus, the central nucleus, the medial nucleus, the lateral nucleus and the cortical nucleus. All of which can be subdivided into subnuclei. For example, the Lateral nucleus can be divided into dorsal lateral, ventro lateral and medial lateral sections.

The amygdala is involved with evaluating things in the environment to determine their importance and generating emotional responses to those stimuli that are considered important. I have much more to learn about this complex structure.
