When 20-year-old singer-songwriter Jewel emerged from seemingly nowhere and started selling a million records monthly in the mid-90s it might have been considered a minor miracle. A young innocent-looking folksinger, only she and her guitar, broke through at the peak of the grunge era. (Needless to say, she didn’t exactly fit in.)

Though, if that’s not considered sufficiently extraordinary, her life story might suffice.

As it turns out she wasn’t from ‘nowhere’ but from a small town called Homer, way, way up north, in Alaska. Far from the ordinary comforts of modern life, she and her brothers were raised on a ranch/homestead, which had neither running water nor electricity. All the children participated in the household duties of the farm to keep the family alive. Every day they had to collect water from the river and carry it up to the farm (water is heavier than you may think!). They also had to help maintain the crops, the domestic animals, and learn how to hunt — and to cook from scratch…
