Are we alone in the Universe?

Who are you?

That’s a good question….Alias, Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973)

I’ve spent a fair amount of time wondering about the meaning of life, if we are alone in the Universe, if there is a God, which religion is correct, is life meaningless, and on and on…

I think it was probably Albert Camus and his philosophical book The Myth of Sisyphus that contributed the most to one of my considerations that maybe there is no meaning to this life, that our quest for meaning in a meaningless world is absurd, as Camus would say, and maybe, just maybe, that’s ok.

Although the notion of the ‘absurd’ is pervasive in all of the literature of Albert Camus, The Myth of Sisyphus is his chief work on the subject. In it, Camus considers absurdity as a confrontation, an opposition, a conflict, or a “divorce” between two ideals. Specifically, he defines the human condition as absurd, as the confrontation between man’s desire for significance/meaning/clarity and the silent, cold universe. New World Encyclopedia
