When Fundraising is a Low-Key Scam
Why do charities think door-to-door is still a good idea?
I think I made a young man second-guess his career choice last night.
Hubby and I were winding down for bed when there was a knock at the door. Worrying that it might be our elderly neighbour, we answered, only to find a young man with a mop full of hair. He looked all official with his bag, lanyard, and golf shirt donning the crest of a commonly known charity.
I thought, “Great, someone wants our money.” I stayed hidden from view and only heard pieces of the conversation.
“There will be no exchanging of money today.”
“We only need your information so we can send you a tax receipt.”
However, when Hubby started giving the kid our information, I became uncomfortable.

- Phone number?
- Email address?
By this point, I had Googled the charity to see if they were actually canvassing door to door. The top search result was “[Charity] Warns of Door-to-door Scam.” Unfortunately, I didn’t see that the article was from 2013, so to stop my husband from giving away any other info, I went marching to the door, phone in…
