When To Publish on Medium — Statistical Explained !!!
Let's get some statistical results for when the viewers are most active on medium
Finally, I put all my learnings over the past few months together to answer the question, “When to Publish on Medium?” I guess this question is not much of importance, but having more views motivates you to write more… Human Psychology!
I have been publishing stories on the medium for the past two years. So, I thought why don’t I collect the data from the medium and analyze it? After some 5–10 min of researching and 5–10 min of coding resulted in this data frame:
It's 798 days, slightly more than 2 years.
Now, it's time to plot some graphs and get our questions answered.
Day Vs Views
The day vs views graph looks like
Note: Here the views are average views.
Evidently, Monday is the most preferred day for publishing your story. And, it has around twice the outcome that we have on Saturday.
Hour Vs Views
Let’s try to understand hourly traffic on medium.
It's apparent that most of the traffic on medium appears from 17:00
to 20:00
Indian Standard Time.
Chi-Square Test
It seems the above distribution is different, but let’s try to prove this statistically. To prove this, we will use the Chi-Square test.
A simple method that takes input:
- The observed behavior: The average view per day.
- The expected behavior: All days should have the same number of views. In my case, it should be 107. (Mean of average views received per day.)
And, the output is a p-value. If the p-value is less than 0.05, the observation is statistically significant. This is the most generic case of Chi-Squared.
The p-value is 0.007538983781230271
, which is smaller then 0.05
. Therefore, these results are significant.
Disclaimer Notes
Though this proves that you will get more views on Monday, here are a few points to remember.
- It's not a competition to get more views on the first day. Your story can still perform better anytime you publish. What matters is how powerful your content is.
Good content may take some time but will Shine.
- This data is biased! It's biased on what type of topics I choose, my geographical location, the frequency of publishing articles, etc.
Hope you have got some insights from this article. Thanks for reading.
