Many years ago, I was at a business function at the Ritz Hotel in London. It was a big event, and lots of very important people were there.

I was a marketing consultant at the time, hoping to hook up with some interesting potential clients.

After an excellently choreographed presentation, all guests were invited to mingle over drinks and canapés for a couple of hours. I was on my own that day and was happy to circulate and do a little networking.

After about fifteen minutes of chatting with a charming couple, it was naturally time to move on. We exchanged the usual politenesses: ‘It was really nice to meet you’… ‘and you too’… and we then parted company.

While I was chatting with the couple, I was aware of a guy who had been lingering nearby. As soon as I turned around, he looked at me with a big smile and said, ‘Peter, how are you? I thought it was you!’

I recognised his face immediately. He was someone who had been very helpful to me professionally a few years back when I was acting as the spokesperson for a trade…
