ILLUMINATION

why this obligation
to just obey and not question

why this hesitancy
to pursue what you fancy

why this fear
in choosing what you wear

why this shame
in uttering his name

This is to serve as a harsh reminder for the inhumane treatment to which the women had been subjected to in the Indian society. The notion of gender inequality was so deeply ingrained in the societal fabric that the wives in India were not supposed to call their husbands by their names. It is quite heartening and comforting to see that now, the relationship between a wife and a husband has started transcending to a first-name basis.

The inspiration for this piece was the infamous poet Jaun Elia. For Urdu and Hindi readers, I am quoting his poem below -

sharam, dehshat, jijhakk, pareshaani
naaz se kaam kyun nahi leti

aap, woh, ji magar, yeh sab kya hai
tum mera naam kyun nahi leti
