The Origins of Christmas

Hey there buddy,

Have you ever wondered how Christmas landed on your calendar? Well, I recommend you grab a: cup of cocoa, snuggle into your cosiest blanket, and let’s sleigh through time to uncover the mysterious origins of Christmas together!

Early Romans

Picture this: It’s the 4th century in the heart of the Roman Empire. The winter solstice, is a time when daylight starts stretching its arms a little longer and marks the backdrop to a pagan celebration called “Saturnalia.”

Romans found themselves indulging in: gift-giving, feasts and celebrating the rebirth of the sun. Now let's fast forward a tiny bit- cue the entrance of Christianity onto the stage!

In a strategic move, conducted by early Christian leaders, a collective decision was made to blend the celebration of the birth of Jesus with Saturnalia. A seamless mix of traditions unfolded, fusing the festivities of both occasions into what we now know as Christmas.

This bold move conducted by early Christian leaders was an attempt to appeal Christianity and its message of monotheism to the masses as most of the Romans at the time seemed to be polytheists.

Medieval Time

This tail does not end there, however.

Let's sail across the English Channel and take a deeper look into the medieval era, where Yuletide cheer is growing into a boisterous carnival.

Enter onto the stage: “Feast of Fools,” a merry affair where social norms have been flipped upside down and laughter echoes through the frosty air!

Just imagine this- a chaotic mix of: theatrical performances, pranks, and celebrations a precursor to modern-day Christmas traditions.

Modern Day

Let's slide into the 19th century, a time when Charles Dickens penned a classic piece of literature still studied in British Schools today: “A Christmas Carol.”

Dickens re-ignited the festive spirit with his gripping tail of a: Ebenezer Scrooge and the benevolent Ghosts of Christmas: Past, Present, and Yet to come.

This classic novel tugged at heartstrings across the country, emphasising the importance of: generosity, compassion and a festive spirit.

What about St. Nicolas you may ask?

Well, he owes his existence to a Dutch legend Sinterklaas, who journeyed house to house delivering toys and goodies to well behaved children. The folklore, combined with Coca-Cola’s marketing birthed the rosy cheeked gift giver we have today.

Final Thoughts

In the grand scheme of things, perhaps Christmas may have just been smoke and mirrors, a blend of illusions we have collectively subscribed to. From its origins in Paganism to its cultural icons crafted through consumerism, maybe it's about time to take a moment to question the authenticity of the festivals we celebrate today.

Thank you for reading and please feel free to share some of your thoughts!
