Covid-19 didn’t just change the world by a health and personal safe view. Its outcome also started to shape how people approach the workforce.

A brief introduction

The Covid-19 outbreak in 2020 changed the world as we knew. If we all were used to living our ordinary life until February 2020, since then a ton of our habits have been compelled to mutate.

The way we approached the others, the importance of our relationships, stressing the importance of our time and, last but not least, our work management as well.

Emphatically this last point was subject to an unparallel shift towards something more handled by the person himself rather than his/her boss.

Before Covid, many people behaved in a way like the work was their life's major pillar. However, this drastically changed.

What is this bringing?

The number of people leaving their jobs in the U.S. has been increasing over the past couple of years, and the reasons are many.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) tracks turnover rates — or the percentage of workers who voluntarily leave jobs by choice rather than being laid off or fired — and it saw a dramatic rise from 2006 to 2008; the rate climbed from 14% in 2006 to 19% in 2008.

For some companies, that’s no big deal: According to a Randstad study, businesses typically lose five per cent of their employees every year.

But for some companies, like those with high job satisfaction and high salaries that take pride in long-term employment relationships (think Software as Service providers or large public sector employers), losing even one worker can mean an expensive talent search or worse — having positions unfilled for a long period of time.

This is leading to…

The consequences of all these significant changes are turning people into a newer approach to the job world.

If before the people viewed the job security, the consequent paycheck, and how their job place was like, as some of the most important parameters to choosing one, although these features are keeping their importance, they’re not the only ones anymore.

Employees, nowadays, look mainly for work-life balance, they give relief to the opportunity of remote working, create their personal products as a freelancer or entrepreneur figure and, overall, want to have full control over these life aspects.

Besides these reasons, there are other ones that are shaping the future employee job-related choices, such as:

  • Alignment with growing industries: People are realizing at a rapid pace that, perhaps, it ought to be better to level up all the personal skills for those who are in high demand nowadays. Marketing, Sales, Communication and Tech are just a bunch of the industries that are the most targeted.
  • College degrees? Maybe not required: Mostly from the Business side, due to the need of filling up the blank job places, HR and Managers figures are switching to a more skill-based rather than degree-based way to look for new talent. Digital and related platforms eased the way people learn new and specialized skills, thinking about the MOOC ones. If until not so long time ago, BD was a crucial point for hiring managers, now employees' personal capacities to reskill and upskill are becoming more valuable.
  • The importance of remote working has skyrocketed: There’s not so much to add to this. With smart work becoming a reality, people aren’t willing to relocate anymore. Why embark on another relocation to a far place if someone can perfectly and comfortably handle his life directly from home?
  • Personal values: Also the mindset toward the workplace has changed. People are becoming more aware that it has always to give something back to the person. Consequently, employees are looking for a more positive place to work, that can also give them the chance to have a huge impact on others’ lives. Furthermore, Z-gen and Millennials workers want to be immersed in a building that can match their personal values.

What will the job world look like?

Perhaps, we’re just at the dust of this new approach to the world.

Only the upcoming years will actually show us how it will mute.

However, a fact is sure: People want to finally start to manage their life at their fullest.
