The MX Mechanical — Edited on Canva

Let me present to you the star of the show- The Logitech MX Mechanical. This magical piece of tech just launched a while ago, and it is absolutely amazing!

The build quality, design, shape ergonomics and most importantly the features, are spot on and downright perfect.

It’s a perfect feel and customizable click types and travel distances appeal to the market(especially me). Furthermore, you get crazy backlighting effects, and allowing you to use this keyboard with up to 3 devices is just crazy cool!

This keyboard builds upon the MX Keys lineup and I am so excited that Logitech has finally added a Mechanical Keyboard to their lineup.

Form Factor

This keyboard is heavenly. It comes in 2 sizes, a full-size and one that is compact. The option is up to you, whether you would like a full-sized keyboard with a separate numpad, or choose to have one that is small and that has less travel but fits on your desk; as well as complements the rest of your hardware.

Logitech has combined the portability of a think and light keyboard and transformed it into a style of a mechanical one.

The keyboard is extremely light and once you look at it In-person and touch the solid aluminum chassis, you will immediately feel that this mouse is perfectly fit for moving around, and is extraordinary portable for a mechanical keyboard.

There is just something about typing on a mechanical keyboard that is extremely satisfying, and I have been using the MX Mechanical Keys for a while now, and I feel that this beats out every mechanical keyboard at this price range.

Personally, the MX Mechanical Mini fits my desk setup perfectly, so I will be opting of that. Though, it is important to keep in mind that the keycap sizes in the full-size keyboard is much bigger.

Design

Firstly, to justify my point, look at the design. This keyboard really tells with Logitechs whole productivity lineup.

It’s very sleek and built really solid, there is no bend or warping when pressure is applied to it, and it has a great 8 degrees angle to it so you don’t hurt your hand while typing; therefore from an ergonomic standpoint, that is the first point that is checked off.

Logitech supplies dark and light-coloured keycaps on the keyboard, so they create an appealing pattern that you would like to type on.

Though, bear in mind that these keycaps will keep fingerprint stains on them even though it has an oleophobic coating; come on now, this mechanical keyboard-only costs $149!

Keys

Logitech supplying 3 different types of keys with this keyboard:

  1. Linear
  2. Quiet Tactile
  3. Clicky

Let me start off with the Linear keys.

Linear

The Linear keys are the ones that are RED in colour.

They give you a fast reactivity and an ultrafast typing feeling that lets your fingers flow through the keyboard.

Just because the tactile feedback is right in the middle, it feels like it has much more travel to it when compared to the other types of switches.

“Your fingers glide effortlessly across the matte surface of the keys — and dual color keycaps make it easy to orient your fingers and stay in your flow.” — Logitech

These switches have an uninterrupted key travel and minimal spring force to make it easier for coders and bloggers to type on(both of which apply to me).

Quiet Tactile

The Quiet Tactile keys are the ones that are BROWN in colour.

These key switches have a satisfying tactile bump you feel — for precise feedback, reactive key reset, and less noise so your typing doesn’t disturb those around you.

Furthermore, they have a more used sound, which would be apt if you are sitting in an office environment, and you would not want to disturb choses who are sitting next to you.

Clicky

The Clicky keys are the ones that are BLUE in colour.

For people who want that satisfying pure mechanical keyboard type feel, the clicky keys are the one for you. Though I must warn you that these keys might annoy the people who sit around you, as they are pretty loud.

It’s the cliché when it comes to buying a mechanical keyboard.

My Choice

Overall,I really enjoy having the Linear switches as they let me code and blog in a flow.

When I write thousands of lines of code, it just speeds me up and gives a nice gratifying click to know that I have actually pressed the key, as it is really important that I don’t make a typo when coding; as a small mistake could eventually lead to a much bigger problem.

Backlight

One of the best features of having a keyboard is a great bakclight, without which it would be challenging to type in dark environments/night. I am a person who works on code and blogs all the way through the night, you can call me nocturnal 🤣!

I have always had issues with my old Apple keyboard, as it doesn’t have lights; so I usually have to have a night lamp on to see what keys are my fingers touching.

This scenario usually becomes extremely hard for me, and I usually quit doing that task if my desk is too dark; but not anymore.

The MX Mechanical clearly does not disappoint as it has a smart backlighting setup that is able to precisely adjust the brightness based on the ambient scenario, but you also have a manual toggle through the keyboard itself and through the Logi Options app.

The Keyboard comes with a variety of amazing options of backlighting as seen below.

I am pretty sure that most of us will keep it on the static mode, and the rest are just to get that aesthetic look in a dark room when you are not working on the computer itself.

Another touch that really lets you know where you are on the keyboard is the 2-tone layout.

The QWERTY layout is a quiet and muted grey, whereas, the function keys have subtle shift to a darker grey/light black. It manages to draw your eyes to exactly where you are typing.

Charging and Battery Life

When it comes to the actual charging situation, we have a USB-C port on the back of the keyboard and on a full charge with the backlight on, you are able to get 15 days and that is slightly higher than what you get on the MX Keys.

If you have the backlight off completely, you Can actually get upto 6 months of battery life.

I found that the happy medium is to have it off during the day and on during the night. It stretches the battery to 1.5 to 2 months on a full charge, which is pretty sweet.

Charging it is super fast and easy, and you can of course use the keyboard while it is charging. I do have a USB-C port hanging from the desk at all time, so it really isn’t an issue.

Software and Buttons — Ultimate Customisation!

This keyboard uses low-energy Bluetooth and can also be used with the Logitech Bolt Receiver that reduces latency especially if you are working where there are a lot of devices that can alter the Bluetooth signal.

On the topic of software, you can use a very special app made by Logitech, by the name of Logi Options+, this app can be used to customise absolutely anything you want from the keyboard, function rows etc.

You can customise the keyboard to do special functions in apps such as Final Cut, Premiere Pro, Chrome, Safari and many other apps; the list is endless…

Though, the best feature of all time time would be to use this keyboard with upto 3 different devices using Bluetooth profiles and Logitech FLow.

You can easily move from one device to another, and the Logi Options app will automatically detect the device you are using and manage the bluetooth profiles in the same way.

My Opinions

So how does this keyboard actually rack up to other mechanical keyboards in the market?

In terms of the actual productivity and typing experience, the MX Mechanical keys are extremely low profile, portable and at the same time an easy and direct replacement to a first-party keyboard such as Apple’s Magic Keyboard.

If you are used to the keyboard the ships with your Mac or laptop, then your are traditionally used to a lower profile keyboard that has less travel. This keyboard is by no means meant to replace a gaming keyboard as they are pretty high-end and expensive, but it can as that if you are some who casually games sometimes.

If the bulk of your work is productivity and typing documents/coding/school work or emails, then this is the perfect step up.

It’s the combination of amazing features as well as that mechanical type satisfying feeling really jells together.

Cost

This keyboard is relatively new, and you can find this Keyboard on Logitech’s website as well as Amazon starting from $149 for the Mini version and $169 for the full size version that comes with the Numpad.

Is this price justifiable?

Yeah, totally! Compared to other mechanical keyboards in the market, this keyboard is relatively cheap for the performance that you will receive. Though, all said and done, I would absolutely recommend this keyboard for anyone who is looking to boost their productivity and typing speed.

Thanks for Reaching the END!
