And Why You Should Too!

Do you like cereal? Is eating fruit loops for breakfast, 7 days a week, 365 days a year the highlight of your mornings? Are you a “serial” cereal eater? If so, this article is just for you.

Imagine it’s 8:45 am on a Monday morning and you’re late for work, having missed all of your 5 alarms. You get dressed quickly and rush over to the breakfast table, with a pack of cereal in one hand and a jar of milk in the other. A believer of the prevailing sentiment that cereal must be poured before milk you go ahead and do the deed, initiating a series of catastrophic events that must inevitably follow a believer of the aforementioned sentiment.

The milk that you had poured in hurriedly bounces off the cereal, and instead of resting inside the bowl, it is now all now over your clothes, table, and important files. A resourceful and tenacious person, you rush to your room to change and return upbeat, ready to finish your meal but are disheartened by the sight that awaits you. In your bowl, which barely five minutes ago housed perfectly crunchy, bite-sized pieces of the wonder that your cereal is, now lay an unappealing and soggy mush, fighting to stay afloat. Disillusioned, you leave for work, with your Monday (impossibly) worse than before.

But what if I told you that your despair was unnecessary? What if I offered a way for you to make your Mondays just unpleasant (as Mondays tend to be), and not horrifying as the frequent cereal mishaps make them? Hard to believe? Given below is a list of reasons put together by me, to motivate you into switching over to pouring milk before the cereal, and not after. Read it to command dominance over your breakfast, and consequently your life.

  • It keeps your cereal crunchy- Based on how hungry you are, you can add the cereal incrementally, as and when you eat. This gives you greater control over portions and ensures that each bite is as crunchy as the first.
  • It is easier to dissolve the sugar/honey- Mixing sugar or honey into a bowl with just milk in it is easier than mixing it into one which has both cereal and milk. Doing this distributes the sweetness more evenly, making each bite perfect. The difference will be palpable to the sophisticated palate of a seasoned cereal eater such as you, the audience of this commentary.
  • A better cereal-to-milk ratio- Having too much cereal and too little milk is a disconcerting experience and many cereal eaters would attest to this. By pouring cereal after the milk, you can gauge how much cereal to put in, and never spoil the golden ratio.
  • Ration milk, not cereal- This reason is specific to me and to the people who use milk for multiple purposes, like making coffee or preparing sweets. If there is a limit to how much milk you can allocate for cereal, it is wiser to pour the milk in first, and add cereal accordingly. Unless, of course, you’re one with a penchant for risk taking.

As is the case with controversial topics, I expect several people to disagree with me and perhaps even offer a more exhaustive list than mine, enumerating reasons as to why pouring cereal first is better. And they are welcome to do so, since ours is a free world and this is a contentious subject which, dare I say, is nearly as debated as the “chicken or egg” issue. But for what it’s worth, I would like to put my two cents in and invite all of you to try my way, or should I say, the right way?
