Why I’m Bummed That So Many Drugstores Are Closing
Spoiler: It has nothing to do with my prescriptions. . .
When I read that Rite-Aid, CVS and Walgreens will be closing more than 1,500 stores, I was surprised that I had feelings about this. A lot. I never realized how much these drugstores meant to me until I learned that they would be closing.
Where else can you get a scoop of ice cream for under $2.50? I have so many fond memories of frequenting Rite-Aid as a kid, debating which of the 10+ flavors to choose from. And I’ve since gone on to treat my children to cones from here. It’s the perfect summer afternoon surprise, or better yet, post-vaccine pick-me-up. There’s none of the pretentiousness or sky-high prices of the designer ice cream shops that have opened up in my town, where a scoop for more than $5 dollars of an odd combination of flavors has become the norm.
Ice cream aside, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention how much I love strolling down those drugstore aisles. As a teen, I would pick out wacky shades of nail polish, and experiment with eyeshadow colors. Nowadays, it’s my escape from the everyday insanity of being a parent. I love perusing the skincare aisles, contemplating which oil-free moisturizer is best for my skin.
The beauty of it is: you really can’t go wrong. There are no stakes. And in today’s parenting culture, where you’re always expected to be on and decisions are constantly demanded on you, there’s nothing better than that.
