Happiness could be the key to longer healthier lives

We live in a world in which we are faced with stress from everywhere. From family to work, every single day takes a toll on us. Life has transformed significantly over the last few decades. We are surrounded by a world of internet and social media. There are more things on the internet than any of us could read. We are influenced by the comments of people on social media, articles, tweets and much more. Choosing what to read and watch can be the difference between happiness and being hurt. We have to make choices and engage in content that makes us feel good about ourselves. We already have enough sources of stress, disappointment and feelings of incompetency. At work, deadlines have to be met, and projects have to be prepared in what seems like no time. This usually means working overtime and beyond the standard office hour days. Even after work, thoughts about work and colleagues are still racing through our minds. On many days, we may need to continue to work at home even after a long day of work. It never stops.

In the modern world, we must focus on the small things that make us happy. Happiness has the potential to change not only our lives but also the people around us. It is an infectious trait, and your happiness can rub off on other people. Increased happiness also increases performance at work and in other aspects of our life. We can get more done in a single day. Just like that, we get closer to achieving our goals and ambitious dreams. We often overlook our happiness and mental health for the sake of productivity and work, but they are directly related. Self-satisfaction and happiness are directly linked to improved performance and increased productivity. It has never been more important to look after our mental health for us to not only contribute our worth to others but also grow as individuals. With the drastic rise of the incidence of depression, anxiety and other mental health conditions, we have to prioritise our mental health. Mental health issues have been neglected for some time now. It is therefore vital that we take responsibility for ourselves and rely on those close to us to ensure that we are in a good mental space.

We must do small things that make us happy to give time to ourselves. In a world where we are always giving to our colleagues, kids, spouses, friends and family — it is a must that we give time to ourselves. Whether this is reading a book every night or doing a particular activity, we need to do it for ourselves consistently. We must gather our thoughts and feelings at the same time. Each one of us has to do things that make us happy as individuals. It is only when individuals are happy that we can make an impact as a society and community. Telling someone to be happy isn’t straightforward.

Many have suffered grief that cannot ever be substituted by anything else. Other people have suffered from disasters that they cannot stop thinking about. Those feelings never seem to go away. It can be tough to get over events that have happened in the past. But it is in today’s world that we try to change this. What I have learnt is that — we have to try to look forward to what the future brings. I realised that I was not happy by myself; I was often reliant on other people to make me happy. I wanted to change that, and I did so by giving more time to myself every day, engaging in activities that made me happy and by looking forward to the future.

We can use our learnings and life lessons from the past in the future. We must do to prevent us from making the same mistakes again. In many cases, we may blame ourselves or feel guilty for specific events. But, we have to reflect on and understand our mistakes to ensure that it is not repeated in the future. Dwelling on the past may continue to bring thoughts of sadness, guilt and disappointment. It can even engulf our lives to the point where we cannot concentrate on our daily lives. But we must make an effort to prioritise happiness and to remember the positive things. We should not focus on the negatives of the past but the excitement that the future holds. This change in the way of thinking will help us feel more confident and bring an air of excitement.

The future is exciting because we have the opportunity to accomplish our dreams and ambitions. We can work towards achieving our goals every single day. We don’t know who we may meet in the future, but one of them could change our lives. As individuals, we have a lot to offer to our communities. We have a lot to offer to big companies, organisations and our communities to make a positive change in the world. We must continually remind ourselves that we can make a massive difference in someone else’s life. Just like this, we can spread happiness in the world where it is much needed. Over the past few months, I found it hard to be happy. I woke up most days not feeling happy nor energised. I was always tired. It took me a while to understand how to get out of it until I realised that I have to start loving myself and looking forward to the future. I had to keep reminding myself to think of excitement in the future and understand that I have a lot to offer my community. It made a huge difference. I feel a lot satisfied, happy and more energetic for the future. I have become more productive, fitter and less irritable. It worked for me, and I think you should try it too.

In this world of uncertainty, stress and hardships, we must prioritise ourselves too. We need to make an effort to think of excitement in the future, the unexpected challenges and the ability to achieve our dreams. Our past has given us a good foundation and many valuable lessons, but we must convert those and look ahead to even better times. Let’s try to be happy and spread happiness to make this world a better place for everyone.
