My mum dubbed my sister “the problem child.”

85.8% of the time, conversations between them turn into screaming matches. It usually ends with my sister locking herself in her room.

Then, as the reasonable firstborn, both sides would complain to me. I am the judge of every presiding case. After passing judgment on 150+ occasions, this is what I have learned.

Personality

My mum and my sister are different but have the same personality. They are both hot heads, unwilling to allow the other person to have the upper hand.

My sister does not understand why she should keep quiet when my mum talks. She always feels the need to defend herself. The tone she uses is usually condescending and disrespectful.

Even when she says nothing, her body language suggests otherwise. She starts the eye-rolling and the hissing.

My mum becomes agitated, causing her to strike.

Why This Never To Me

After honing my skill for a couple of years, I know how to detonate the bomb that is my mother.

Even if I disagree with whatever she says, I keep quiet to listen. In a calm tone, I would then refute her statement.

93% of communication is non-verbal,

63% being voice tone.

The tone of voice is in everyday conversation. It is a part of content writing that sets you apart from others.

Expert writers tell you to write as you speak. What does this do? It gives your writing a consistent tone throughout.

You can say the same thing to two people — while one person might get offended, the other might thank you.

The tone is the attitude with which you write it. Voice is what you say, and tone is how you say it.

Types of Voice Tone

  • Formal
  • Informal
  • Friendly
  • Optimistic
  • Pessimistic
  • Curious
  • Worried
  • Encouraging
  • Joyful
  • Sad
  • Sincere
  • Humorous

The type of tone a writer uses depends on the level of formality and the subject matter. A constant that should appear in your writing is the confident tone.

You want to appear knowledgeable about the topic. When you are confident in your writing, your readers will trust what you are saying.

How To Develop Your Writing Tone

Remember your Readers

Every reader matters. Write in a simple conversational manner. You want to be approachable like you are talking to a friend. Do not be too technical with your words.

Add in Details

Use words that convey deep emotion to your readers. Avoid writing that falls flat.

Compare these two.

  • She jumped up and down.
  • She jumped joyfully.

Practice

Try rewriting a block of text with different tones and then compare them.

Identify the tones in other articles. Note specific words that elicit emotion.

Writing is about practice. Voice tone connects you to your readers and makes them feel heard.
