There are millions of posts on Instagram lately with hashtags #soberlife, #sober or #soberliving. This is because the “Sober Curious” movement is attracting more and more people, especially young people.
Guides to an alcohol-free lifestyle as well as books and recipes on the subject are becoming more and more popular each day. There are even organized alcohol-free music festivals that offer “natural euphoria”.
The desire to be and stay sober is increasing, especially among the younger generation.
No longer are the young people who voluntarily abstained from drinking alcohol at parties having to put up with mockery for being bland or party-poopers. This is all thanks to “sober curiosity”.
In most European countries such as Germany, France, Britain and Spain, the figures for alcohol consumption among young people have been falling since the year 2000.
It’s not entirely clear why sobriety resonates with millennials and Gen Z. The fact that access to information about the dangers of alcohol has become easier thanks to the internet and social networks could have something to do with it.
