Why Timing is Everything

I never understood what it meant when people rambled on about how timing is so imperative when it comes to two souls colliding, until I met Him.

We first became acquainted in the our martial arts gym. He always had on this head gear, and as a die hard Arsenal fan, I made up a name for him in my head — he was to be named Petr Čech.

We never spoke much, until my break up with an ex-boyfriend where a bunch of us got together at a bar in the morning to watch the ever so infamous McGregor versus Khabib fight. It was 10 in the morning, but only the both of us were the ones who grabbed a pint or 2 of Guinness. A man of class.

Thus begun our borderline flirtatious banters. He had strikingly greenish blue eyes, and long dark curly hair. I was single then, but unfortunately he was not. I play the electric guitar, whilst he was a bass player in a band. Not only did we have similar very musical background, we had the same taste in music — heavy. fucking. shit.

We both loved literature and films, and could spend hours on end post-gym at the bar drinking whilst talking about Sartre, Requiem for a Dream, and the likes. The chemistry was unreal but alas, the timing was not right.

You will be hearing a lot of the aforementioned phrase for the bulk of this article.

We headed to Vietnam for a Brazilian Jujitsu competition, where we spent our last day there partying till the sun rose. Just the two of us. From deep conversations, to playful banter, to drinks on drinks, to chilling in the hotel pool. A memory that still lives on vividly in my head till this day.

But timing’s a bitch, despite the insane chemistry we had. We could have, taken the low road of crossing the boundaries of being friends — but no one deserves to be cheated on, not at the expense of hurting another human soul i.e. his then-girlfriend.

The day finally came where we were both single.

I wish I could say this story has a happy ending, but it does not. We had our time, but it was short-lived. Covid-19 had him travelling back to his home country.

Timing’s a bitch. Timing is everything. One may argue that time is just an illusion, but in this case, it was very much so tangible, and imperative.

As Chuck Palahniuk once said, “You met me at a very strange time in my life.”

We will have our adventure again one day, J. Till then. Let’s embrace this madness together.
