Most of the time, people mix up career mentors and sponsors.

There is a distinction between them; you both need them in your career.

I have a client based in the United States; she tapped me as her career mentor. It was also beneficial for her to have a career sponsor inside her firm while working on her career plans and progression.

While I offered valuable guidance, I directed my client on how to take advantage of career sponsors who can leverage their networks so that it can open doors for her in line with her goals to climb the ladder.

As a career mentor, I helped her frame the strategy on what to do, while her career sponsor will help bridge her to the suitable mediums and channels upon executing her plan.

The search for potential sponsors

It is ideal for everybody to have a boss as a career mentor and sponsor.

That is a win-win situation.

But not all bosses have been generous and supportive like what we hear from career coaches.

In reality, some bosses are insecure, a**h**les, and do not care about your progress or situation.
