I know what you’re thinking: why would you want to sleep in a room with a bunch of random people on my vacation?

I used to think that too.

Before I realised how expensive travelling is and how much hotels or villas can eat into your budget.

For some background, I’m a teaching assistant, and I have travelled to 22 countries (and counting) over the past 7 years of my life, so I know what it’s like to travel on low income.

I now only stay in hostels.

Hostels may have gotten a bad reputation a few decades ago but this is 2022 and things have changed a lot since your parents backpacked around Europe in the 80s.

Here’s 3 reasons why you should consider staying in a hostel on your next city break…

Reason 1: They are an affordable option

Hostel prices at the moment are around the $35 mark a night if you want to go somewhere reputable in Europe, New Zealand or Austrailia. The prices can be as low as $10 in Latin America and Asia.

By spending less on the room you stay in, you free up money to spend on experiences and amazing food. Hostels often have perks such as WiFi and breakfast included in the price.

Don’t forget you’ll usually also have access to a kitchen, so you can save money on eating out by buying groceries.

Just make sure to label your food properly and it won’t be used by anyone else (I’ve never had my food stolen).

Reason 2: The staff are usually locals

This one may not be true for everywhere you go, but I’ve found that many of the staff where I have stayed are local to the area and can be great to ask for unique places to eat or visit.

Having local staff can only enrich your experience, and allows you to get something more cultural out of your trip.

Reason 3: They often have free group activities on

Most hostels host amazing free group outings and activities designed to help you mix and network with your fellow travelers. These can be great places to make new friends.

Popular activities include game or movie nights, walking city tours and pub crawls.

Nothing brings a group of travellers together like a game of Scrabble or singing karaoke until 1am.

Put yourself out there and see what it brings you!

So you can see, there are some great reasons why you should consider staying in hostels on your travels. They are a cheap and cheerful alternative to traditional hotels and airbnb.

Just respect your roommates, buy some earplugs and an eye mask and you’ll have a great time!
