Many people find the learning process challenging. Studying can be hard but following inefficient study strategies can lead to frustration. This guide provides proven tips for active participation, personalization, and self-care to encourage everyone to be brilliant.

Before we start, I would you to place all of the advice you’ve heard from teachers, experts, or well-meaning individuals must be set aside until you have tangible proof that what I’m telling you to do is enjoyable.

Step 1: Planning is key

Have a general plan for your routine, thoughts, and what you intend to do during the day, and at the end of the day, critically analyze it and update it, this is an excellent method to start improving yourself and understand where to do more.

Step 2: Preview and Outline Concepts

Read the topics that you will have to face, approach new concepts, and don’t read the whole book, but just enough to have a framework, to not fall into the subject. This point is very important because the knowledge you are acquiring can be obscure to the point of discouraging students and even experts, getting involved from the beginning in the content of what will be covered is much more useful. Outlining the general concepts will provide a boost!

Step 3: Active Participation

Be an active participant during the lessons, don’t just take notes of what the teacher is explaining reluctantly. Take breaks, reflect, question yourself, and question others. There is a risk of becoming a stenographer, in a very didactic and formal course. Writing anything that was written on the board without understanding it is useless. The goal is to understand the subject, not to fill notebooks.

Step 4: Balance Distraction and Engagement

During the lesson, it is normal to be distracted, talks to friends, waste time on your phone, and ask questions, it’s normal, but a class is also beautiful with fun, so don’t take yourself too seriously. Remember we are humans we need social interactions and emotional connections to have a positive environment and feel good about it.

Step 5: Ask Questions

Ask questions, circling a point that is not clear, or writing down some connections, can allow the student to enter into a deep and exciting understanding of the subject. Asking questions is a good sign that the mind is actively engaged. Below, is a circular workflow for active participation.

Step 6: Personalized Note-Taking

Taking notes with small stars, and different colors, in short, personalizing them, is first and foremost an excellent way to make the subject your own, but it is even more important because I know that I will come back after the lesson on that subject. In general, I don’t recommend any specific technique for taking notes (there are many popular ones, like the Cornell method, which you can find anywhere). That’s because note-taking is a very personal process and in order to make the material you’re studying feel like your own, it’s also good to follow your own style.

Step 7: Review After-Class

After the lesson (or a session) , It becomes more complex because there will be many temptations and choices that will depend on personal preferences. If I will have a question that came to my mind, I will try to answer it with the tools I have or I will look for help if I can’t answer. The advice is always to not ask for help immediately, but to struggle with the subject to understand exactly what it means. If you don’t understand 100% of the contents of the lesson, don’t move on! Ask for help, solve it yourself or with a friend, but don’t neglect your work. Reviewing will allow you to never fall behind.

Step 8: Change the way you look at things

Reformulate the subjects. Try to answer a classmate’s question, and ask yourself questions, because reformulating the subject allows you to see it from different angles and to understand it better. The key to effective note-taking is to rephrase the information in your own words. This not only helps you understand the concepts better, but it also improves your long-term memory. So, be sure to avoid simply copying the words of your instructor and put your own spin on it! The next step includes one of the best workflows I created.

Step 9: Broader Perspective and Generalization Process

There are different types of questions to deal with the topics, but it’s not about the number of questions you ask. The most interesting and useful are generalization questions, those that help you see the bigger picture. These types of questions allow you to understand how the topic you’re discussing relates to other topics, giving you a broader perspective. In the long run, the benefits of asking these types of questions will be amplified.

Step 10: Practice creating your comfort zone

Practice is a fundamental element for achieving excellent results. Mathematicians, Data scientists, and other scientific subjects require a lot of practice. It’s like when someone tells you how to swim and you perfectly understand the principle and the idea behind floating, but until you do it, you will never truly understand it. You just have to practice, and the more you do, the better.

Well-done exercises demonstrate that you have crystallized your knowledge, and give you the security of being able to perform them alone.

Sometimes, just two exercises on a theme carried out in class are enough to really understand if you grasp it.

Step 11: Evaluate Progress

An important thing to have when you are learning something is to have indicators of the effectiveness of your study. This will allow you to evaluate your methodology, examine and correct it or start over with a new method. Sometimes we are not so good at judging ourselves until we are faced with a problem and we are forced to make progress. Only then can we prove to ourselves and others that we have understood.

Step 12: Self-Care

Finally, don’t forget to take care of yourself, eat well, sleep well, and have a good physical and mental balance. This will help you to better focus on studying and to be more effective. Remember that you are at the center of everything that revolves around yourself, before exploring what surrounds you take care of shining.
