World Book Day is an annual event we celebrate on April 23rd. The day is set aside to honor authors, illustrators, and books. It is also a day to promote reading, especially among children and young millennials.

The history of World Book Day can be traced back to 1923 when the first International Children’s Book Day was held in Spain. The event was created by Spanish writer Miguel de Unamuno and Catalan librarian Maria Teresa Girona. It was intended to promote reading among children and young people and encourage them to appreciate the value of books.

The idea soon spread to other countries, and in 1925, the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) was founded.

What is the significance of the world book day?

The day is significant because it celebrates the importance of books and reading. It also promotes literacy, which is essential for personal and societal development. According to UNESCO, “Literacy is a key driver of development and a force for change.” Therefore, days like World Book Day are important in striving to achieve global goals such as gender equality and poverty alleviation.
