Wouldn’t It Be Helpful if We Found Reasons to Agree?
We may disagree on many issues, but let’s remember what brings us together.
My country is deeply divided right now. As a counselor, I talk to clients every day who are concerned about their future, their finances, and even their safety. I encourage them to take it one day at a time and not dwell on everything they fear might happen. I find it hard to follow my advice. It’s frustrating when friends and family members celebrate the things that are causing so much stress and anxiety. Rather than argue or ridicule the “other side,” I want to start sharing why I feel the way I do, a little bit at a time.
My journey from right to left
During the pandemic, I wrote a lot about my opinions on Donald Trump, changing my political party, and how I felt about the racial tensions at that time. Sharing my views resulted in strained relationships with some friends and family, and eventually, I just decided it was better not to share my political opinions on social media.
Since the pandemic, I have occasionally posted about politics, but most of the time, I keep a lot of it in because, you know, I love my friends and family, and I don’t want to create friction. I am a peacemaker at heart, and I don’t like conflict. Also, I’m…
