Your Google Search Releases as Much CO2 as Boiling a Kettle for a Cup of Tea

Did you know you emit CO2 by doing something as mundane as googling “recipe for delicious sushi at home”?

The answer unfortunately is YES!

Say what?!

I was shocked too. The claim in this article hit me like a sledgehammer:

Performing two Google searches from a desktop computer can generate about the same amount of carbon dioxide as boiling a kettle for a cup of tea.

That is around 7 grams of Carbon Dioxide.

It is calculated based on the electricity used by the data centers that handle your search queries and send your the results.

The research and the article were from 2009 and Google refuted this claim promptly by saying the emissions per query are around 0.2 grams.

However recent estimations still hover around 10 grams of CO2 for a search query!
