Do you know which is the most important relationship of all? It is the one you have with yourself. Oftentimes we look for validation in other people. Yet, they don’t give two cents about us. That can be hard. In reality, they don’t owe us the substantiation that we are good. And beyond that, seeking corroboration of our worth from people who are intent on taking advantage of us is a recipe for disaster. Instead, here are some ways to self-validate and grow more confidence in yourself.

Gratitude

Take a little time every day to contemplate what you have to be grateful for. That will build up your sense of self-esteem. Living with gratitude will level the playing field. You will come to realize that no one is better than anyone else. We all have roles and the ability to make a difference in our community, no matter how big or small our circle is. And that you are up to the task.

I start my mornings with the question — What am I grateful for today? I choose something different for as many days as possible. Some of my recent gratitudes include the skills and ability to make a difference in the lives of others, the people and animals that made it possible to have my meal, my friends, my partner, and the place I live and work that pays me enough to live here.
