Merits of Mobile Voting/eVoting over EVM Voting

Online Voting or Online election(also known as Mobile Voting) is a voting method that happens through an eVoting app installed on mobile or any electronic device connected to the internet. The process is easy and less confusing. People can vote from the comfort of their own homes and elect their desired individual in any kind of election. Mobile Voting helps various private companies, NGOs, clubs, and other small or large scale organizations to conduct elections that they can personalize for themselves. It helps not only the organizations but also the voters to cast their votes without any outside influence.

EVM Method of Voting in India:

As a democratic country, India relies heavily on elections. Through general elections, every five years the citizens of the country re-elects the state and central governments. Since this century, India adopted the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) as the equipment for all of its general elections. It’s a machine where the names of all the candidates are mentioned together with the name of the parties they belong to. Voters need to stand in queues in voting booths and vote for their respective candidates, pressing a button in the machine.

Advantages of Mobile Voting over EVM Voting:

More Engagement of the Voters:

A certain percentage of voters miss out on casting votes due to several reasons every year. It gets tougher for the senior citizens to stand in long queues for hours. People living outside the state or country can also miss out on casting votes. The new technology of Mobile Voting can help such people to cast their votes quite easily without any issues arising. People will involve more in the procedure and it will increase the voter’s engagement.

More Secured and Private Elections:

Election booths where the EVM machines are kept for voting are not fully private for the voters. Many outsiders including party workers intentionally influence the voters to vote for a specific party. It somehow exposes the system and compromises the integrity of the election. Online Voting not only helps people to vote from their own houses but also ensures complete privacy. The OTP authentication and other important details make sure that the entire procedure remains completely private and secured.

Less Expensive elections:

Elections have always been very expensive. Since the EVM era, the cost of buying the machines, storing and keeping them cost a fortune to the government. Apart from that, the cost of manpower is also pretty expensive. With Online Voting, many of these unnecessary expenditures can be reduced. As the entire process happens over the internet, the cost of building websites and developing a voting app is much cheaper than the other methods of conducting elections.
