Best Book To Read Think Like a Monk by Jayshetty

I used to be someone who didn’t really believe in reading self-help books. However, I received this book as a gift, and out of boredom, I started reading it. Surprisingly, my perspective toward reading books has completely changed. This book has truly helped me.

About Book:

This book is a self-help guide that provides step-by-step instructions to help you train your mind, establish a positive daily routine, eliminate negativity, conquer fear, overcome overthinking and anxiety, and improve your approach to problem-solving, among other things. Overall, it helps you discover inner peace and purpose in your life.

About Author:

Jay Shetty is a former monk, podcaster, and life coach. He was inspired by Monk Gauranga Das’s speech when he was in college, which led him to practice monkhood. He wrote about his monk experience in this book.

My Favourites :

Negativity:

The author says Negativity is everywhere, Negativity is Contagious. Negativity should be reversed both internally and externally.

Reverse External Negativity:

We are often upset by the way other people treat us. The author says “There is no commandment that says we have to be upset by the way other people treat us”. Instead of reacting compulsively, we could enjoy our freedom as human beings and refuse to be upset.

Reverse Internal Negativity:

The author provides a straightforward method to counter internal negativity by following SPOT, STOP, SWAP

SPOT a feeling or issue

STOP to understand what it is

SWAP in a new way of processing

Forgiveness:

I really like the way he explained about forgiveness. He says forgiveness is a two-way street. We are much more comfortable finding fault in other people and forgiving it. We’re not used to admitting fault and taking responsibility for what we create in our lives.

He recommends an exercise called “Ask For and Receive Forgiveness.” I have personally tried this exercise, and it significantly helped me in the process of mutual forgiveness. Fear:

The author says the Cause for fear is attachment, Cure for fear is detachment. I appreciate the way he encourages us to accept fear and work with it. He suggests managing fear by categorizing fear patterns, such as handling short-term fears, short-circuit fears, and long-term fears.

Fear does not prevent death. It prevents life.

Ego:

He says Ego is a mask, Ego Makes us Liars, Ego is An Obstacle to Growth.

An unchecked ego harms us. In our eagerness to present ourselves as the greatest and smartest, we hide our true natures. If you are satisfied with who you are, you don't need to prove your worth to anyone else.

He explained the various types of egos and offered guidance on how to overcome them. Additionally, he effectively clarified the distinction between ego and self-esteem within the book. He emphasizes he says to keep an eye on our ego.

Routine:

The book effectively emphasizes the significance of establishing a structured routine. It also offers valuable guidance on creating various aspects of a routine, including morning and evening routines, meditation practices, food habits, and managing cravings.

. Do not give your attention to what others do or fail to do; give it to what you do or fail to do
