Starting college is an exciting time filled with anticipation and new beginnings. As an incoming college freshman, it’s natural to feel the urge to prepare and acquire various items for this new chapter. However, it’s important to remember that not everything is essential for a successful college experience. In fact, there are certain things you can leave behind. Here are the top things you do not need as an incoming college freshman:

Excessive dorm decor: While personalizing your dorm room is fun, it’s unnecessary to go overboard with excessive decorations. Remember that you’ll have limited space, and keeping it clutter-free can create a more conducive environment for studying and relaxation. Excessive dorm decor can also be a hassle during the move-out process when the newness and excitement of the decor have worn away.

All the textbooks: It’s tempting to purchase every textbook listed on your syllabus, but hold off on buying them all. Some professors may provide alternative resources or suggest shared copies within the library. Wait until you attend the first class to determine which textbooks are truly essential. It may be tempting to buy textbooks as soon as you know which ones, but oftentimes, you may end up not even using the textbooks during the semester.

Unnecessary kitchen gadgets: Bringing along a few essential kitchen items, such as a microwave or mini-fridge, can be helpful. However, avoid accumulating unnecessary kitchen gadgets that will take up precious space and rarely be used. Focus on practicality and simplicity when it comes to cooking and food storage. As a freshman, it is often very hard to cook consistently especially if you have a meal plan. Oftentimes, having a meal plan is required for freshmen at many universities. In addition, eating out is very likely bound to happen. Therefore, having cooking utensils is not a very necessary item for a freshman.

Excessive wardrobe: While having a variety of clothing options is important, packing your entire wardrobe is unnecessary. Consider the climate and the typical dress code on campus. Pack versatile items that can be mixed and matched, and remember that you can always purchase seasonal clothing once you’ve settled into college life. It is very helpful to create capsule wardrobes that can be used for many different occasions.

High expectations: One thing you definitely do not need as an incoming college freshman is excessive pressure or sky-high expectations. College is a time of growth, exploration, and learning. Allow yourself to embrace new experiences and adjust to the college environment without setting unrealistic goals that may lead to unnecessary stress. College is a time for much self-development so many unexpected exciting things can happen.

By letting go of unnecessary items and expectations, you’ll create a more balanced and fulfilling college experience. Focus on what truly matters — building relationships, engaging in academic pursuits, and embracing personal growth. Leave behind the excess baggage, both physical and mental, and step into your college journey with a lighter and more open mind.
