Corporate Lessons: Stop Getting Blindfolded

It’s been around a decade since my corporate journey started. Witnessed many cinematic instances, and high / lows, and befriended almost everyone. The corporate journey made me realize dozen of things that appeared to be a myth sometimes. I have tried to jolt down my experience under the following:

Nobody is Your Friend or Enemy

Nobody cares about what relationship you possess, be it your boss or a colleague. All matters, in the end, are ‘Business’ and ‘profitability’. If you’re good at it, you’re rewarded.

Keep Learning and Adding New Skills

For sustainability and longevity, you should never stop learning. Learning is the key that will sideline you from the buoyant crowd.

Never Hesitate for a ‘No’

The earlier you develop a habit of saying ‘No’ to any situation wherein you don’t find yourself comfortable, the quicker you would find yourself at peace and be able to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Salary — Not a Favor

Salary is purely a subset of contribution and is a business deal.

Human Resource — Not For You.

HR is there to protect the company, not an individual.

Business Never Suffers

You should never think like the business would get a hit if you would separate yourself. Business always has a dedicated team that is capable enough to come up with ‘plan B’, no matter what the situation is. You will not be missed.

Be Polite and a Good Listener

Whichever dimension you’re working upon, you should always hear others first and should always attain politeness. You would only be able to create a communication channel when you are polite and can hear.

Effective Communication

You should learn to draft effective emails which are in a way short, to the point, and impactful.

Document Critical Things

You should develop a habit of documenting everything that you find is crucial or can have an impact on your career.

Stop Blaming!

A blame game is something that businesses won’t like and accept. If it’s your fault, you shouldn’t walk away. Accept the fault, plan mitigation and make sure you don’t get stuck into the same.

Cheers!
