I would like to begin this article by reiterating that there is no quick, easy way to get popular on medium. Nor is this a platform where you can quickly make money a lot of money.

Harsh, but it’s the truth.

The problem writers face

According to Medium, there are approximately 175,000 writers on this platform. Thousands of stories are published here each month. There is a massive overlap between the content of different writers.

A lot of topics are very common and you are likely to find 20 different articles written by 20 different writers on the same topic.

For example, I have written this article titled “ Do This to Get Popular On Medium”.

I am sure you will find at least 10 similar articles on the same topic.

That being said, it is very hard to attract readers and get thousands of views. Because of so much similar content, you can’t be unique.

No views mean no money. I am sure everybody had a month when they were paid less than $5.

I wasn’t paid anything in the months I stopped writing. Here’s proof:

The months when I didn’t write

Funny, right?

What do the top 1% writers do

The top writers on Medium usually have around more than 5,000 followers and a niche. They focus on topics like finance, start-ups and entrepreneurship, self-development, health, and technology. But that doesn’t mean you should have a niche ( I’ll talk about that later).

The key thing to note is that these writers did not get lucky overnight; they were once like you and me: trying hard to promote their content and get views.

Most of them have been on the platform for over 2–3 years, and their consistency is the key to their success. Writing so many articles has not only refined their skills but has also taught them which topics are their best bet.

Persistency has fine-tuned their skills to a level that every article they publish is enjoyed by their readers.

Most important: What do you need to do?

I think you already know the answer to this question.

Consistency. Consistency. Consistency.

Try to write as much as possible. You don’t need to have a niche. Write about anything that comes to mind; write short stories.

When you’re consistent, you learn which articles are best liked by your audience. Moreover, your writing style will be so refined that readers will make an effort to read your content.
