During a fortunate five minutes

--

Projects done for the day, relaxation beckoned. Surprisingly, a bit of reading on the deck superseded the oft-desired gin and tonic. Printed matter in hand, the backside was planted in an Adirondack chair.

But wait. What’s that motion in the hydrangeas? Better put down the book and grab the camera.

Black Swallowtail butterfly on Quick Fire hydrangea.
Black Swallowtails are common, but new to the author who took this photo.

It is more often true that we finally notice common things we have overlooked than that these things are actually new to our environment.

Monarch butterfly
This Monarch also enjoyed the hydrangeas while posing for the author.
Tiger Swallowtail on Buttonbush
The author was pleased to capture both a Tiger Swallowtail and a bee on the Buttonbush.
Aphrodite Fritillary on Indian Cup
The Aphrodite Fritillary enjoyed the Indian Cup as the author watched.
Chipping Sparrow
The Chipping Sparrow may be common, but the author thought you’d enjoy the feather detail in this close-up.
male Ruby-throated Hummingbird
The author captured this photo of a male Ruby-throated Hummingbird. What planet are they from?
Female Yellow Warbler
Yellow Warblers love to hide in the bushes. This one emerged for just a moment so the author could capture her.

And then she was gone. She must have known the fortunate five minutes had expired. Regardless, luck and awareness provided a time to remember.
