How can you build an engaged community that supports you at each stage of your writing journey?
Here are key strategies:
1. Give Value Freely
Provide a ton of value at no cost. Share your insight through free blog posts, an email newsletter, helpful social media content, and guest articles.
My students often ask me how much is too much to share. No amount is too much to share — give 100% of what you know.
Generously giving your best ideas builds goodwill and trust. Nurture this audience by delivering consistent value without expecting anything in return.
2. Share Your Personality
Let your personality and voice shine through. Be funny, inspirational, opinionated, or quirky.
Give people a window into what makes you tick.
Your unique perspective and tone create emotional connections, even if readers have never met you. Give your words personality.
3. Be Transparent
Open up about your experiences — successes, failures, lessons learned.
No one expects you to have everything figured out. Vulnerability and honesty are magnetic.
Share behind-the-scenes thoughts on creating. When appropriate, pull back the writing process curtain. Authenticity breeds loyal supporters.
4. Respond and Interact
Engage constantly, not just when promoting new content. Reply to blog comments and social media messages.
Never ghost on your audience.
Have conversations and ask questions. Active interaction makes supporters feel valued as more than just followers. Notice and nurture your community.
5. Reward Your Audience
Surprise fans by giving back, like exclusive content for subscribers only or contests and giveaways.
Reader-only Q&As, polls to shape your next article, and free downloads act as reader “thank yous” that incentivize following you.
