How to Start a Stock Photo Business on Etsy: Professional Photography at a Decent Price
When I got tired of paying high prices for stock photos, I decided to create my own stock photo business on Etsy. Offering the professional photography that I have taken all around the world and in my studio at a decent price. I hope to change the way people buy stock photos and help small-time people afford to buy high-quality photos.
As I mentioned above, I have been taking professional photos for years and selling prints to people I know, plus trying to sell them on Etsy. This is as hard as it is for a painter to sell the beautiful artwork that you see on Etsy or in a gallery.
First things first: Taking photo’s that might sell
If you don’t have a fancy camera, then you probably have a smartphone like most of the world. You need something decent to get high-quality photos. The newer smartphones have a very good high-quality photo lens that would make for excellent stock photos.
It’s not the camera anymore that makes a good photo, it’s what you see in your head and then capture on the camera. With a little research and practice, you will get great results.
Next up: Edit the photo’s
This also doesn’t have to be fancy if you have a newer phone or a good camera. I use an app on my phone (Lightroom Mobile) and it’s really easy to make adjustments, crop, and export the photos as JPEG files that Etsy will accept. I-phone has several good Apps as well and I know other apps are cheap on the wallet but give good quality editing. Just do a little research and you will be on your way.
Now you’re ready to open up your Etsy shop
This in my opinion is the easiest and the most rewarding part of the process. You get to choose your name Example — (StockPhotoPro), design your Etsy cover photo, and if you would like design a professional Logo.
Head over to Etsy.com and sign up.
When you have created the account, you will simply download your professional stock photos and price them.
I’m keeping this as low as possible but not crazy, I started mine off at $4.99 and they can buy 4 while getting one more free.
Creating a passive income stream
The great thing about this type of business, it takes a little upfront work and easy consistent uploading photos. Then it turns into a passive cash flow machine or at least I hope so at some point!
