What you can and cannot do with Medium writing introduction.

With Medium article writing there are some great editing tools, a lot of things you can, and what you cannot do with Medium writing. In this article, we will point out what you can do with existing Medium writing tools. But we will also suggest a few additional editing tools, adding to the list of what you can do with Medium writing.

There are several great things you can do with Medium article writing to “spice up” your layout, but there are also a few things you cannot do with Medium article writing. In our opinion, what you cannot do might play a role in the overall article display and exposure potential. Limiting the ability to create more curiosity.

Medium is without a doubt our absolute favourite writing site, but we did notice a few (missing) editing tools in comparison to similar sites. But we will get to that during the course of this article, “What You Can And Cannot Do With Medium Writing!”. More importantly, we will show you the tools you can use to make a huge difference.

With Medium you can mention other writers in Medium articles for instance, but you cannot mention them in comments. “Mentioning” someone is done by simply entering their Medium username with the at (@) sign and a drop-down menu will allow you to choose. This is precisely what we are going to do so this can reach the “right people”.

As opposed to lengthy emails and discussions, we sincerely hope that Tony Stubblebine will “get wind of this” and perhaps kindly consider our suggestions. To the best of our knowledge, Tony is the “new” CEO of Medium. We have “connected” with him before, a true gentleman and kind soul. He has great plans for Medium, we can tell you that.

We suggested additional editing tools for Medium article writing.

As for what you can and cannot do with Medium writing, we will now dive into our suggested additional editing tools. But we will also show you how to use existing Medium writing and editing tools and strategies. What we love most about Medium writing is the added advantage of getting noticed by all major search engines.

Some of the below mentioned, suggested additional editing tools are available via the Medium App. But not on a desktop, like adding bullet points for instance. Bullet points, in turn, are often used when search engines select an SEO snippet when displaying your content. For the SEO snippet to show though, you need to “take position one”.

Adding Bullet Points.

Leveraging Numbered Lists.

Mentioning Other Writers In Comments.

H3 And H4 Headers.

Underlining Text.

As illustrated below, you can see why using “bullet points” and “numbered lists” from an SEO point of view, is so paramountly important. Notice how the H1 Header (Title) is directly relevant to the H2 (Subheader) snippet heading. Search engines choose the most descriptive text directly related to your article title for the SEO snippet.

Furthermore, you will also notice the thumbnail image. Based on your image alt text, caption, and provenance. Search engines will choose the image most relevant to your headings and most descriptive article body text. This, by the way, is what makes Medium “different”. They make it much easier to optimise images with SEO.

Although you can mention other writers in Medium articles, as mentioned earlier. You cannot use the same strategy to mention writers in comments by typing their usernames (Medium Handle). You can just add H1 and H2 headers, and we think it would be great to have the option to add H3 and H4 headers too.

While we’re on the subject, let’s just explain how headers work, and what their purpose is. Your H1 header is what displays in search engines, and also your “target search phrase”. H2 headers describe H1 headers often in a latent semantic indexing kind of way. While H3 headers describe H2 headers, which in turn, are described by H4 headers.

Numbered lists bear the same advantages, from an SEO point of view, as bullet points. Mentioning other writers in comments may often result in more exposure and visibility. Being able to underline text can attract extra attention to a particular text section, and sometimes even add to maintaining curiosity. In turn, this contributes to readability.

Some exposure strategies with existing Medium editing tools.

For the purpose of demonstration and better understanding, we refer to our monthly “top responders lists”. That is how you leverage the “mentioning other writers” strategy, which by the way, is an unprecedented visitor boost! We publish a curated list of our monthly top responders only once per month.

It’s a strategy, don’t abuse it by not applying the strategy moderately. Adding a friend link so Medium non-members can have unlimited access to your Medium articles. And editing your medium article SEO Metadata can be done from inside the editor, by clicking the 3 dots and selecting “More Settings” from the drop-down menu.

Adding the “Medium Kicker” phrase is an H2 header you add just above your Medium article H1 header (Title). Perhaps more like an H3 header but, nonetheless. Remember how we told you that one header basically describes the next? That is precisely what the kicker text is supposed to do. Describe the title as short as possible.

With medium writing, you must add the required disclosures where needed. Like the affiliate and AI content disclosures. When you share affiliate offers, or use AI to generate your Medium content, you must include the disclosures. Use quotes and quote blocks, quotes by clicking the “quote icon” once. And “pull quotes” by clicking on the icon twice.

Including A Kicker Phrase.

Using Quote And Pull Quote Blocks.

Transparency By Adding Disclosures.

Image Alt Attributes, Captions, And Provenance.

Leaving Private Notes.

Editing Meta Description.

Bold Keyword Text.

Image alt attributes, captions, and provenance are of paramount importance with search engine image indexing. They serve as a kind of Metadata for search engines to index your images, speeding up the indexing process as a result. Leaving private notes can be done by clicking on the little padlock icon as illustrated below.

Next up, the real SEO “kicker” with Medium article writing, editing your Medium article Metadata like title and description. Now, if you do not have much of an idea about SEO, then we strongly advise you to leave the article Metadata as default. Medium does a pretty good job with that. If you are however a bit SEO “educated”, you might want to use this.

By leveraging the “what you can do with medium writing”, we have seen remarkable growth in both views and audience engagement. All these existing tools with the Medium editor can be used with outstanding results. We would just like to have a bit more “options” so to speak, therefore, suggested a few additional editing tools or options.

In the event you want to add a “friend link”, like we do just above the medium article featured image (Medium Non-Members Can Read The Full Story HERE!). This link is found right beneath your Medium article SEO settings, more specifically, right beneath the “SEO Description”. Sharing that link will boost your medium article views.

Since starting to apply these editing options, as mentioned before and illustrated above. We have seen remarkable growth, going from an average of 50 to 100 views per day, to almost 300 views per day. That is a 300% to 500% increase in Medium article views. Leveraging these available tools though takes a little time to gain traction.

Oh, we almost forgot about the “bold text”. As you will notice with this article, we have bolded the target keyword and search phrases with the introduction and conclusion. Why is that? Good question. That is because it draws attention from both readers and search engines, and in some sense even creates curiosity. Therefore, an SEO advantage.

Conclusion of what you can and cannot do with Medium writing.
