My best friend had been absent from my life for the previous three months.

Yes, we lived two time zones apart, but normally Lauren and I texted daily and spoke on the phone once a week.

Then she disappeared.

I assumed she was going through something she wasn’t ready to talk about or was dealing with a recurrence of depression.

I never suspected that she was cheating on her husband.

How She Told Me

After weeks of evading my phone calls, she finally agreed to talk on a Saturday afternoon.

I was taken aback when she sounded boisterously happy, more so than I’d experienced in her for years.

After a bit of chit-chat, I asked her directly what was going on. I shared that I knew she was avoiding me. What didn’t she want to talk about?

“I’ve been cheating on Doug,” she said. “And I’ve never been happier.”
