Population Decline And The Consequences

An interesting concept

There have been other articles and videos on the extent and effects of population growth (or decline) but certainly none as elaborated and intelligent as Dr. Darrell Bricker’s book Empty Planet: The Shock of Global Population Decline.

It is certainly interesting to see how the situation has changed. In the 1960s the Club of Rome was warning that severe overpopulation would lead to riots and mass starvation by the year 2000. Now it seems that by the end of this century many developed countries may not have enough young people to survive.

In a discussion of his book as part of the Vail Symposium, Bricker proves effectively that every continent (including Africa eventually) is experiencing a population decline, including the two most populous countries, China and India. By 2100, China will have lost 668 million people and India 290 million.

Only a few countries will increase in population, largely due to immigration. At about 58 minutes into the discussion, Bricker elaborates on the dangers of the current anti-immigration sentiment in many countries. Bricker says, “At some point in the next 15–20 years, immigration is gonna move from a from a seller’s market to a buyer’s market.” Countries will compete for the best engineers and innovators, something that, of…
