What is a Medium writing growth strategy?

In my opinion, an effective Medium writing growth strategy is about getting recognized as a professional in your field. And have the knowledge to back that up, that is how you gain your audience’s trust.

A Medium growth strategy can be defined as a technique to build recognition, and gain trust through offering solutions. Your own solutions will take months to assemble, test, and fine-tune.

Growing on Medium, or any other platform for that matter means you have to be present to be noticed. You cannot “take over the party” when you’re not present, simple as that.

Growing on Medium is about a whole lot more than just writing Medium stories and solving problems. Medium publications also form part of this growth strategy. But first, allow me to demonstrate.

I guess you will appreciate some proof that this growth strategy actually works on Medium, and rightly so. There are way too many fake claims floating around, so I don’t blame you.

Below is a real-time screenshot of the monthly growth statistics at the time of writing this article. Please bear in mind that this is my new Medium profile, currently just under 5 months “young”.

Considering the percentages of increases each month, I am rather pleased with the results. If this strategy could do this in 5 months from the word “go”. Then imagine where it could be in a year or two. Just a thought…

Medium writing and getting ideas to write about.

As a writer, it’s not uncommon to struggle with finding fresh writing ideas from time to time. Heck, I sometimes run out of ideas too. Those times staring at your PC screen thinking “I go nothing…”.

My personal favourite for fresh ideas, however, is commenting on other Medium stories. Sometimes people start asking questions and, BAM, memory jump started! Here are some tips that might help you:

Read widely: Reading books, articles, and blogs from various genres and fields can expose you to new ideas and perspectives. This can inspire you to write about new topics or approach familiar topics in a different way.

Keep a journal: Carrying a notebook or using a note-taking app on your phone can be a great way to capture ideas as they come to you. Write down anything that interests you or that you think might be a good topic for a future piece of writing.

Brainstorm: Set aside some time to brainstorm ideas. Start with a general topic or theme and write down everything that comes to mind, even if it seems silly or unworkable at first. Once you have a list of ideas, you can refine them and choose the ones that seem most promising.

Experiment with different forms: Trying out different forms of writing, such as poetry, fiction, nonfiction, or even screenwriting, can help you discover new ideas and techniques that you can apply to your main writing project.

Draw inspiration from your own life: Sometimes the most compelling writing comes from personal experience. Think about your own life experiences, the people you know, and the places you’ve been, and see if you can find a story or idea that you can explore further.

Collaborate with others: Working with other writers or creatives can spark new ideas and bring a fresh perspective to your writing. Consider joining a writing group or finding a writing partner to collaborate with.

Remember, fresh writing ideas can come from anywhere, so keep an open mind and stay curious. Collaborating with others will provide you with fresh ideas to grow from.

That way, you are then able to offer fresh solutions once again. Some of the best topics I personally find to write about are topics around solving problems and providing clear guides.

Make a list of Medium stories to come back to.

Comment, and come back to new comments. Save recently published posts and grow by leveraging commenting. Choose topics you know a lot about, so you can add value to your comments.

Create multiple Medium lists based on specific topics and then save relevant Medium stories to your lists. You can also check for popular stories with lots of comments, those work well for the next step.

These Medium stories are the ones you want to come back to and comment on. But you also want to comment on existing comments already on the Medium story. This will increase your exposure rather considerably.

However, when focusing on popular posts in the Medium feed related to your list's topics. Before you start commenting on the other comments, note the date of the last comment.

A comment that was placed a few hours or days ago has a much better chance of a response. Then let’s say a comment that was left 3 years ago.

The primary purpose of these Medium lists is to interact with other Medium members. It helps you “put yourself out there” by building a reputation based on the quality of your comments.

Now a simple idea I use to keep track of where I commented, is to clap on the Medium story included in the list. That way I know that the ones that do not yet have claps are the ones I am yet to engage with.

Write Stories on Medium but don’t publish!

Yes, you want to build up a “draft list” of articles with Medium, because GEO targeting is of utmost importance. You can prepare the entire Medium story with all disclaimers and offers where applicable.

Include all the images, captions, alt attributes, provenance, and copyright requirements. Basically, have your Medium story ready to just press “Publish”.

Although I have mentioned the importance of GEO targeting and the “draft list” before in other Medium stories. Let’s just do a quick recap. Because you must establish the time difference between where you are and where your target audience is.

I am in South Africa for instance, but I am targeting a USA audience. Therefore, should I publish posts, and stories, or even upload videos at 12:00 PM on my side? That would mean it is around 03:00 AM in the morning where my target audience is.

That kind of defeats the purpose. As I am targeting a North American audience, I have to focus on Pacific Standard Time which is minus 9 hours difference from my time.

That is why you want to write all your Medium stories as draft posts, during the time your target audience is sleeping for instance. And then publish your Medium stories during the time your target audience is most active.

Strange enough, I find my target audience to be more active from around 9 PM to 2 AM. This means that I have to get my content “out there” from around 6 AM to 11 AM on my side.

This might also be the reason you might struggle a bit to get traction with your Medium stories exposure and responses. Have you decided on a GEO location target audience?

Have you established the time difference and worked out the best times to post from where you are? These are all questions and requirements that play a really important role in reaching the right audience.

Because the key to recognition is to get the right solution, in front of the right audience, at the right time. The quality of your content and timing is the two most important factors to responsive exposure.

Preferred content for this Medium strategy.

The following suggestions are based on a marketing point of view. Marketing and making money online, are also niches that are literally bursting at the seams!

But as with pretty much any other niche, the quality of your content will determine the level of your success. The amount of knowledge you have on a particular subject plays its role too. I find the following kinds of content works really well on Medium.

How-To Guides.

Answers To Questions.

Free Stuff.

Solutions To Problems.

Step-By-Step Guides.

Mentioning Other Writers.

Content related to the above, I personally find to be in demand on Medium. Especially from a marketing point of view, because you will be amazed at what people are struggling with.

And there will always be someone struggling to do something you have already mastered, just trust me on that. See, recognition and trust work like this. You learn from those who know more than you, so you can teach those who know less than you.

Use the social sharing options with a twist.

With the sharing options provided by Medium, namely Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. You want to leverage that even more, and to do that you are going to have to put in some work.

Starting with creating your own Facebook and LinkedIn groups. Along with Facebook pages, but also multiple Twitter profiles. You are allowed to create 5 different Twitter profiles.

Simply create Twitter profiles, groups, and pages related to the Medium content you want to share. That will broaden your reach by means of using the social sharing options with Medium rather considerably.

Once you have shared your Medium story on LinkedIn, you then also share it with your LinkedIn group or groups. But you can also share with groups where you are a member.

With LinkedIn however, you cannot share directly with a group from the Medium sharing options. That is available with Facebook only because the Facebook sharing window provides you with options as to where your content must be shared.

With multiple Twitter profiles, it is much the same as LinkedIn. After you have shared your Medium story to one Twitter profile, you must go to Twitter and change between profiles, then share your Medium story again.

Mention and inspire other authors.

Certainly! Mentioning other writers and authors can add depth and context to your writing, as well as show your awareness of the wider literary world. Here are some tips for how to do it effectively:

Use the author’s full name: When introducing another writer or author, use their full name to show respect and avoid confusion with other people who may have the same name.

Provide context: Explain who the author is and what they are known for. This can help readers understand why you are mentioning them and how their work relates to yours.

Use quotes and citations: If you are discussing another author’s work or ideas, use quotes and citations to give credit and show that you are engaging with their work in a thoughtful way.

Be selective: Don’t name-drop just for the sake of it. Only mention other writers and authors if they are relevant to your topic or if their work has had a significant influence on your own.

Consider your audience: Make sure your references are appropriate and understandable for your target audience. If you are writing for a specialized or academic audience, it may be appropriate to reference more obscure or technical writers.

However, if you are writing for a general audience, stick to well-known authors and avoid overly specialized terminology. Some examples of how to mention other writers and authors in your writing:

“As Jane Austen wrote in Pride and Prejudice, ‘It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.”

“In his seminal work, The Interpretation of Dreams, Sigmund Freud argues that dreams are the ‘royal road to the unconscious.”

“Drawing on the ideas of postmodernist writers like Jean Baudrillard and Michel Foucault, this essay explores the ways in which reality and simulation are becoming increasingly indistinguishable in contemporary society.”

With Medium stories, however, you have the option to use the Medium author’s profile handle to include their profile automatically. You cannot do this with comments on Medium though.

I find this a really effective strategy on Medium too. Mentioning other writers, because once a month I will do a Medium story like, “My Top Medium Responders For February”, or “Top Medium Writers You Want To Follow”, and even “Let’s Welcome These New Writers On Medium”.

All you need is a little creativity to mention other writers and authors on Medium. Medium stories with curated lists where you mention the authors, and then include a link to one of their best stories.

They get a notification “_______just mentioned you in a story”, and that is the curiosity for most people right there. But as mentioned just now, be selective.

Preparing Medium stories like this where you mention other authors can sometimes take days, and weeks to compile. Because you need to mention the relevant writers based on the story title. But they draw a lot of attention!

You are going to see a powerful, but simple method that anyone can do. No matter where you live, and your level of experience. Perfect for beginners, but also works great for intermediate or advanced folks. It requires zero online marketing skills! — Source
