Reflect on Old Songs- ‘My Demons’ by Starset
My Demons — Starset — (fan lyric video) — YouTube
Here is a music teacher and professional cellist’s interpretation of ‘My Demon’ by Starset. Below is my summary of his reviews of this song, check out this website for further details.
Music teacher’s interpretation of the lyrics:
- ‘My demon’ signifies the dark side of people.
2. ‘Sinking ship’ is a metaphor for a suffering life.
3. ‘Circling like vultures’ means people are isolated and defenseless.
4. ‘Oh, you make everything okay, okay, okay.’ This part highlights hope in this turmoil and the desire to search for a sense of peace.
5. ‘Save me if I become my demons,’ unveils the human conflict between their darkness and the need to be loved.
6. ‘I need a savior to heal my pain when I become my worst enemy,’ indicates the battle inside the heart with the dark force, an enemy.
Conclusion: It resonates with people who have endured difficulties before. The vulnerability and fragility of being a human, but we never give up on receiving redemption and peace.
Hope you agree with me that art is never absolute.
My thoughts on this song:
- ‘My demon’ is like becoming a person who doesn’t follow his heart and belief to comply with this corrupt society for money, higher power, or fame.
2. ‘Sinking ship’ implies people are drowned in lust and deceive world and cannot find their self-values.
3. ‘Circling like vultures’ vividly shows us the fierce competition to survive in society. You cannot let down the guard or you’ll be replaced and vanish.
4. ‘Oh, you make everything okay, okay, okay.’ I guess ‘you’ is a sacred power or a person’s belief that you’ll end up having peace.
5. ‘Save me if I become my demons,’ with the lead of a sacred power or belief, the person can be him/herself authentically without being polluted by the twisted society.
6. ‘I need a savior to heal my pain when I become my worst enemy,’ if reality is too cruel to take, and the pain may be the pain of guilt to hurt people to satisfy the greedy, demon side.
Conclusion: In my view, the singer was struggling to make an ethical decision or a ‘money-talking’ decision to comply with this raveling world.
Be a person who can stare yourself in the mirror straightly or a person who has everything and can be recognized by the public, but only he cannot recognize himself in the mirror.
