The Japanese Maneki Neko cat (Literally meaning the “beckoning cat”)is one of the most widely used Feng Shui symbols believed to bring good luck and fortune. Maneki Neko, also known as money cat, is usually displayed in windows or entrances of various business establishments in Japan.

The Folk tale behind Maneki Neko

It is believed that a rich landlord was once traveling to some place in Japan and took shelter under a tree during a violent storm. He noticed that a cat from a nearby temple was beckoning him with a raised left palm. The landlord walked up to the cat who took him to the temple. Just a moment later, the tree under which the landlord was resting suddenly got struck by lightning. The landlord henceforth erected a statue in the name of the cat known as Maneki Neko.

Significance of Raised Paw

The lucky cat figure features at least one paw raised in a welcoming gesture.

  • Right paw: invites luck and money.
  • Left paw: Signifies that customers will flock to a business. It is used by establishments like restaurants and stores helping them attract more customers.
  • Both paws up mean doubled good fortune or strong protection.
  • Feng Shui believes that raised left paw usually attracts women while the raised right paw is good for attracting men. Hence, establishments like beauty saloons or other women-centric stores are better off keeping a Maneki Neko with a raised left palm.

Meaning of different colors

  • Black: Represents fire element. Protection from all kinds of threats and provides wisdom
  • Blue: Attracts harmony, peace, and happiness
  • Golden: Wealth and money
  • Green: Favors students in studies, heals sickness
  • Red: Represents Fire element. Protection against evil and helps getting fame
  • White or metallic finish: Purity and happiness

Placement for Maneki Neko

  • Maneki Neko must be placed in the wealth area (South-Eastern corner) when used domestically.
  • For business establishments, shops and stores, it can be placed at the entrance that is visible to the people entering.
  • A lucky cat in the kitchen could boost the healthy nutrition of the meals you cook.
