Our Nanny always scolds us kids if she hears us tell our kids they can’t have ice cream because it’s too early yet. She would throw her hand at us and off she went! A few minutes later she would return with a “baby” ice cream cone for all the kids. She always said “there is no thing as too early for ice cream, it’s just sweet milk! It’s good for you she always said!

The Inside Scoop on Ice Cream
Ice cream, in its simplest form, is made from milk, cream, sugar, and sometimes egg yolks — ingredients that, when frozen and churned, create the soft, scoopable delight we all know and love. While it’s often labeled as a guilty pleasure, there’s more to ice cream than meets the eye (or the taste buds).
Before you label ice cream as your diet’s arch-nemesis, let’s churn through some of its potential health benefits:
- Calcium and Vitamin D: Thanks to its dairy base, ice cream is a source of calcium and vitamin D, essential for bone health.
- Boosts Serotonin: Ice cream can boost serotonin levels, making it a go-to for uplifting your mood. (Yes, there’s science behind why ice cream makes you happy!)
- Provides Energy: With carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, ice cream can be an energy-boosting snack.
However, like all indulgent foods, moderation is key. Opting for versions with less sugar and healthier ingredients can make ice cream a sweet part of a balanced diet. Opt for versions made with natural ingredients and less sugar when possible. For those with dietary restrictions, there are plenty of delicious dairy-free and sugar-free options available that don’t skimp on flavor. And remember, enjoying ice cream as a treat rather than a staple can help maintain a balanced diet.
Crafting it at Home: Homemade Ice Cream Recipe
Making ice cream at home is not only a healthier alternative to store-bought versions but also a fun activity to enjoy with the kids. Here’s a simple no-churn recipe to get you started:
Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream
Ingredients:
- 2 cups heavy cream, cold
- 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
- 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
Instructions:
1. Whip It Up: In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to whip the heavy cream to stiff peaks. Be patient and get the kids to watch as the cream goes from liquid to fluffy clouds!
2. Fold in Sweetness: Gently fold in the sweetened condensed milk and vanilla extract until well combined. It’s like crafting a sweet, creamy cloud.
3. Freeze: Pour the mixture into a loaf pan or a freezer-safe container. Cover with plastic wrap and freeze for at least 6 hours, or until firm.
4. Enjoy: Scoop and serve! Feel free to add your favorite toppings or mix-ins like fresh fruit, chocolate chips, or nuts for an extra special treat.
