We have been asked the Question what is BitMari? BitMari is a combination of 2 words, Bitcoin and Mari. Mari is a Shona word (Zimbabwean language) for Currency or Money. If you have had the pleasure of walking in the streets of Zimbabwe you will often hear the local people say “Mari-i?” Which means how much is it?

Africans have always had the concept of money. Africans first used money in the form of cowrie shells. Later in history cattle and grain were endowed with value and used as “Mari” in trade. This concept was later adopted by the rest of the world.

We combined the disruptive technology of Bitcoin and the ancient concept of Mari to create a system where Africans in the diaspora can send their money home. You can read more about bitcoin in our previous post.
