Moving to a hostel for school/university? Here’s everything you cannot do without!
As a first-time hosteller, most people have no clue as to what I would actually require to survive in a hostel. We thought we could do you guys a favour by cracking one of the biggest pre-hostel problems- WHAT DO I PACK?
1) Thin towels
Fluffy towels are on our anti-packing list. It occupies space and takes time to dry. Carry a couple of thin towels that are easy to fold and wash.
2) Toiletries
Soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush, floss, nail clippers, razors, shaving cream, sanitary napkins, hand sanitiser- These are the things you don’t want to be looking for the moment you land.
If the city you’re going to happens to be infamous for its water, then be sure to carry a dry shampoo or a hard water-friendly shampoo to protect your hair from the harsh mineral salts.
3) Medication
You’re an adult now! You should be equipped enough to take care of yourself in case you’re running a temperature or get a headache. Carry a first-aid kit containing paracetamol, antihistamines, balms, band aid, antiseptic cream, cough syrup and an electrical heating pad.
4) USB Multi-charger
When you are running out of juice on your smartphone or tablet, the first thing you hunt for is a power adapter for the device. Make your life easier by using a 4-in-1 multi-charger.
5) Reading light
You don’t want to be that pesky roommate who studies till 4am every day, with the tube lights on. Do your future roommates a favour by getting a handy, rechargeable book lamp.
6) Electronic gadgets
Didn’t you always think that you could live on Netflix and your phone? Not in a hostel, sweetheart. Carry an iron box, kettle, hair straightener, hair dryer and an induction stove.
7) Padlock
You’re sharing a room with strangers. Secure all your valuables using a padlock. A numeric lock is even better!
8) Wall hooks and hangers
Who likes a boring room? Hang your Dreamcatcher, paintings and pictures, or even fairy lights to embellish your room!
Hangers are a must for easy-drying of clothes and it saves you the trouble of folding!
9) Clothes and bedding
You should not be backing out of a trek with friends to Munnar, just because it’s monsoon and you don’t have the right gear. Always carry clothes and footwear for summer, winter and monsoon.
Take your favourite pillow and blanket to hostel, depending on the weather conditions.
10) Utensils
Even if you do not have to cook, we recommend you carry a spoon, plate, cup and a water bottle. You can also get a 2 in 1 cooker from Prestige, which can also work as a Kadai. Thank us later!
