reviewing what I know of the the Cambridge Analytica scandal is that their Facebook app gave them access not only to the people that agreed to it but their friends list as well. something that Facebook realized was happening and changed how their apps work so that can’t happen. they then made Cambridge Analytica sign a legal document that said they deleted the data. Cambridge Analytica then did not follow that agreement and kept the data.
from my point of view looking at an example of if someone in their job signed a document to keep information secret and then breaks that secrecy it be the employee's fault, not the company’s. so I’d feel Cambridge Analytica is much more to blame than Facebook in this situation. yes there may have been ways Facebook could have looked more into it as they said themselves but it was Cambridge Analytica that broke the trust that social media influence is built upon.
many people are already aware Facebook has their information. but it was information they themselves gave to Facebook. so f they didn’t want it out there don’t put it on Facebook. I guess part of it is the trust that we gave to Facebook to keep that information secret which is why they’re blaming Facebook. but considering how quickly social media evolves its hard to always keep policies up to date to deal with such problems
this even goes for social media based companies such as Facebook. Mistakes happen. Facebook has said they’re sorry and going to try to make sure it doesn’t happen again. that’s what I think we should hope from them and put more focus of blame on the one that actually broke the trust agreement Cambridge Analytica.
