Juniata College Traditions: A Story Using Emojis 🦅💙💛
Emojis are among the most important communication tool out there. We use emojis to express our emotions, substitute for our body language and tone, and add meaning to our conversations. Tracey Lien explains that “an estimated 74% of Americans use emojis every day” and the 😂😂😂 was “chosen as the Oxford English Dictionary’s 2015 word of the year,” (Lien). President Lincoln might have even used the ;) in 1862 (okay, so consensus might be that it’s a typo)… but hey, we can dream! (Lee).
However, emojis aren’t as simple as they seem. Megan Farokhmanesh says that emojis are simple at a glance because they are instantly recognizable; however, each icon’s creation “requires a carefully researched proposal, review by a subcommittee, refinement, approval, and, most importantly, someone willing to champion the emoji through the process,” (Farokhmanesh). That’s pure dedication to communication.
Mark Davis, a co-founder and the president of Unicode Consortium even thinks emojis have the potential to become a language. David explains, “It’s not a language, but conceivably, it could develop into one, like Chinese did,” he said. “Pictures can acquire a particular meaning in a particular culture. I’ll mention the infamous eggplant emoji, which has gotten to have a particular meaning in American culture, one which is not shared in a lot of cultures,” (Bromwich). 🦞fest is held at the 🔚 of the 🥇🗓 of 🏫📚📝 and welcomes 👩🎓🧑🎓👨🎓back to 🦅💙💛🏫 after 😎😴🤪☀️🍹🏖🏝. 🦞fest is a 🧺 that features 🦞, 🥩, 🍗, and other food like 🥔 and 🌽. ➕, 👩🎓🧑🎓👨🎓 can 🖋⬆️ to join ♣️s like 🎮, 🏹, 🎨, 🩰, 🤿, 🎤,🎬, 🥏, and more!
Storming of the Arch
🌧🌩⛈ of the Arch takes places on the 🥈Thursday of the 🌳➡️🌻🍂🍁 semester. The tradition is optional for 🥇-year 👩🎓🧑🎓👨🎓 who gather in the 🎯 of the 🏫 quad to charge the Cloister Arch and get past the 🏉 Team and other ⬆️classmen to ➡️➡️➡️to the other side to get priority for ⭐️🏠. Normally, 🥇-year 👩🎓🧑🎓👨🎓are 🚫 successful and are 🛑❌❗️To 📅, only a few 🥇-year 👩🎓🧑🎓👨🎓 were successful.
Mountain Day
⛰📅 is the 👵est tradition at 🦅💙💛🏫 and occurs on a ❓ 🌳➡️🌻🍂🍁 📅. The specific 📅 is ❓to 👩🎓🧑🎓👨🎓 and 👩🏫🧑🏫👨🏫 until the 🌅 of the event when they are 😴🥱🤪⬆️ with 🎉📣🔔🚨. However, the 📅 is a constant ❓ around 🏫 until 📢💯. On ⛰📅, all 🏫📚📝 are ❌❌❌ and 🧑🎓👨🎓 and 👩🏫🧑🏫👨🏫 🚗🚙🚐 to Raystown Lake, a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ location in the are. ⛰📅 includes 🍔🌭🍉🍪🍦, ⛵️🚤🛶, 🍃 👣, 🏊🏖, tug-of-💣, and more.
Homecoming and Family Weekend
🏠coming and 👨👩👧👦👩👩👧👦👨👨👧👦 🗓🔚 features events for 👩🎓🧑🎓👨🎓, 🎓 🦅💙💛🏫, and more. There are 🎓🍻🍾 reunion activities, 🏈🏉⚽️🏐🏑🥍 events, a 🎪🎡🎨🤹♀️ on the quad, and much more. Everyone has a 🥳🎉🎈time.

👨♂️🦅💙💛🏫 is a 👅-and-🤪 🤴🏆👑 spoof of 👸👗💍💄🏆 👑 where 2️⃣ 🤵 from each 🏫📚📝 compete for the coveted 👑. The categories include 🤵🎩💼, ⭐️🎤🎻🎨🩰, and 🗣💬🎤🔥. The 🥇🎖🏅 gets the 👑.
Madrigal
😡🤬👑 is a ❄️🎩🕺👑💃 and 🍽️ that occurs on the Saturday of the ➡️🌻🍂🍁semester. This ☃️❄️✨ tradition starts off with a 🍽️ served to 👩🎓🧑🎓👨🎓 by 👩🏫🧑🏫👨🏫 and staff of their choosing. After 🍽️, guests enjoy performances and ☃️🎄🎁🎤🎶. The sing-along ends with the 1️⃣2️⃣📅 of 🎅🎄🎁 🎶☃️ with the 5️⃣⭐️💍 tables 🎭 out different parts of the 🎶. 🎟🎟🎟 for the tables are sold 🥇-come, 🥇-served after 👩🎓🧑🎓👨🎓 ⛺️🌲🌠 out during 🗓 prior to earn their section (🔝section is 5️⃣⭐️💍) by pranking each other throughout the 📅. The🌙💫✨ ends with 💃🕺✨ and 🥳🎉🎈.
Pig Roast
🐷🐽🔥 is an annual 🍖 held at Raystown Lake and is sponsored by the 🏉 teams. This BBQ is where the 🏉🎓🦅💙💛🏫 play a match against current 🏉 team. It’s the 📅 🐝4️⃣ 😫😭🤯📚📝📖 and the 🔚 of semester 🥳🎉🎈for seniors. Those who are 2️⃣1️⃣ and ⬆️ can 🍺🍺🍺.

Bailey Oratorical Contest
My 🤩😍🥰 tradition is the Bailey 🗣💬🎤 🏆🥇💵. The 🏆🥇💵 is one of the 👵est traditions at 🦅💙💛🏫 as 👩🎓🧑🎓👨🎓 from all 🏫📚📝 areas can 🗣💬 their 🧠🧠🧠 and the audience will 👀 and 👂. 7️⃣ finalist compete for 🥇💵,🥈💵, and🥉💵. 3️⃣👩⚖️🧑⚖️👨⚖️ ✔️✔️✔️ for the 🏆🥇💵. In the 🔚, the contestants show their 💕💕💕 for our 🌎🌍🌏 and the diverse 👨👩🧑👶👧🧒👩🦱🧑🦱👨🦱👩🦰🧑🦰👨🦰👱♀️👱👱♂️👩🦳🧑🦳👨🦳👩🦲🧑🦲👨🦲🧔👵🧓👴👳♀️👳👳♂️ that make this 🌎🌍🌏 a better place.
