For a long time, social media was a conduit for anxiety and jealousy in my life. The constant feeling of not being involved, of not understanding the conventions and the social norms, it was a persistent reminder of abnormality. Then, I finally realized one day that forcing myself into participation at all was just putting me in an unhealthy box. So I stepped away, deactivated my accounts and haven’t looked back. Now, that’s not to say I think it’s all bad. I still work with it in my job, and being removed from it has helped me to see some of the benefits too. I think the ability to connect with new people, to find groups that suit our interests, and to maintain contact with people across the globe is of great importance and benefit. As for the future of it, I see the overlapping of live streaming and social media to continue to the point of complete assimilation. Twitch streamers are already commanding attention for hours of the day, even in mundane aspects of their lives. One day, as integrated technology allows, our entire lives will be available to be checked into and watched online.
