The Imagination Chapter of Westport’s Great Duck Parade, honoring the Westport Sunrise Rotary. Thanks to The Westport Library and the Imagination Foundation for their support!

Folks were amazed to see the Imagination Chapter of Westport seventh-graders dressed as fourteen giant ducks parading around the Westport Mini Maker Faire. To genuinely co-create requires a leap of faith — and my students proved they really do believe in each other!

We meet once a week to tinker, build, design, and entertain. We sketch, do improv comedy, build with littleBits circuits, and MakeyMakey, program with Ozobots, and draw in the air with 3Doodlers. Along the way, we discover just as much about ourselves and each other as we do about the materials. Special thanks to the generosity of the Imagination Foundation and their partners who sent us wonderful materials to try!

Our big project this year was a surprise parade at the Westport Mini Maker Faire on April 30th. To raise awareness of the Westport Sunrise Rotary’s Great Duck Race, their annual fundraiser so they can give to local and world-wide charities, we built large-scale rubber duck costumes out of chicken wire and paper-mache.

Shout out to the Westport Library for co-chairing the Mini Maker Faire, plus giving us a space to complete part of the paper-mache process. Shout out to the Westport Public Schools for supporting this initiative.

Rather than describe this three months of chaos and joy, we’ve made a video so you can hear from the kids and see the ducks in action — enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBUEXfQuntg
