Part two to Coffee To-Go
Soon news got around that a man had gone missing from our little town. Don’t worry, love, I was sure to cover my tracks. I came into the diner and sat at the same spot I always have but you were nowhere to be seen.
For three fucking days, I came and ordered this shitty coffee. This Cathy woman is a pale comparison to your radiant light. She can barely cut pie yet here she is talking my ears off as she pours my coffee. The smell of cheap pie is overtaken by the burnt smell that left my cup.
How I hate that you’re not showing your face after all I’ve done for you! For us! You said see you tomorrow! You never showed; did you stand me up? Me?!
The bell rang behind me, sending a fresh breeze into the tiny diner. Accompanying the breeze was the scent of roses, which sent a chill down my spine and my heart rate quickened. I knew without a doubt it was you. I did not look up as you walked to the back to place your belongings in your locker.
Two can play this game. I watched as Cathy patted you on the shoulder and gave you an embrace. I gritted my teeth, I am the one who waited for you, and you are hugging this filth. I watched as you pulled away and brushed down your apron. Then your eyes caught mine.
Oh, how you could melt my anger. Your smile forming gave me all I needed to know. You did miss me. I understand you can’t control Cathy. She burns coffee too easily on a daily. Who knows what kind of psychopath she is? You approach me placing a hand on my cup.
“This is not your usual, Sweets.” her voice is like a violin playing a love tune meant only for my ears.
“No? I suppose not.” I’ll keep my cool for now.
You took the sorry excuse of a cup away and came back with a new mug. The way your fingers brushed mine as you returned my cup sent sparks through my hand.
A high pitch of a voice jerked me back to reality as Cathy proclaimed she was clocking out. You take your attention away from me to wave goodbye to her. There is no need to worry; my plans are already in motion for Cathy. See, she lives alone with her three cats and is very lonely. It was not hard to find her on Tinder.
It was also not hard to buy a burner phone. Making the account was easy. I just used some random google image and a fake name. Seems like Cathy is going on a date tonight. You have nothing to worry about, this is just a matter of me getting rid of one more person who stands in the way of us. It is just a plus that she won’t be able to make me, or anyone for that matter, coffee ever again.
“Do you work around here, Sweets?”
I snapped back to the task at hand and when your angel voice spoke all my thoughts drifted back to you. “Just moved here a few months back,” I say, sipping from my mug while raising a brow. “Did you always want to be a waitress?”
“Does anyone? No, this is just a temporary job while I’m not at college.” She started wiping the counters down.
When you’re mine you’ll never have to work again.
“Oh, there are campus’s around here?”
She laughed. Oh, how I missed that laugh.
“It’s three blocks from here, walking distance,” she said with a wink leaning on the counter. I could tell she was putting on a display for me and as I glanced down I could see a pretty picture. I made my eyes dash back up to hers, had she noticed? I slowly sipped my coffee.
“I see best be careful walking alone. I heard a man went missing.” A strange emotion flashed across her face but she was quick to recover her timid smile.
“When I heard about that man, at first I was sad. I had served him earlier on that day he went missing. I was likely the last one to see him alive.”
I remember that day clearly. You were definitely not the last to see him alive. I drank my coffee.
“It is scary to think that happened so close to here. But a girl has to work, and I’m closing tonight, so that’s a bit stressful.”
“I could walk you home if you wish.”
Her smile returned to her face. “Would you?”
I nodded yes and placed my cup down. “I have nothing better to do.”
She grabbed my hand and held it in hers with a squeeze. “Thank you so much I really would appreciate that. The dinner closes at nine, that’s in four hours. you won’t be bored, will you?”
I took my bag that was on the stool next to me and removed the book I had been reading. Thanks to you not showing up for the past three days, I have started coming prepared.
“That would be the amount of time it would take for me to finish this book. I can wait.” I have waited, and I will wait for you.
She smiled, “alright, a slice of apple pie is on the house, Sweets.” she winked again. As she walked away, I pulled the burner phone out of my bag and opened up Tinder. Sending a quick text to Cathy.
Sam: Hey, I’m going to be a bit late tonight.
Cathy: You’re not standing me up are you?
Sam: I wouldn’t miss it for the world.
