“Nothing is un-designed.”- Mike Monteiro”

Imagine driving a car that has 3 wheels instead of 4, and instead of on the ground they’re sticking out of the roof. Or how about a computer without a button to turn it on with. Even though these are silly examples, it’s proof of Monteiro’s (the author of “You’re My Favorite Client”) point that everything has a specific design. As a designer, keeping in mind that design is not only how the product will look, but also how it will function enhances his or her chances of getting exactly what the customer wants and needs.

Although at times obvious, the first chapter of Monteiro’s book entitled “Why You Need Design” lays out the truth that future designers (like myself) need to hear, in order to understand what it logistically means to be a designer over any platform. As a designer, and as a person existing in life, you need to realize that everything is susceptible to change. The business, sales, and design team need to work together to make sure that everyone is on the same page as the process moves along, and no one gets left behind. Almost like the mantra of Lilo and Stitch. Problems will arise, like a lack of resources, conflicted chain of command, and bad content, but being able to work well with others, take feedback, and be confident in your abilities will help you manifest a way to combat them.
