WWE stands for “World Wrestling Entertainment” and this most recent edition to the WWE 2K franchise is a disappointment.

Gampelay trailer for WWE 2K20 from IGN.

Strengths include a new “2K Originals” mode that can lead to more creative and consistent additional content for the game. It is a smart way to add new moves, entrances, superstars, and arenas. This years edition of MyPlayer mode involves a female superstar as the main protagonist. That is a fresh and welcome change. While the story is corny, it works for a comical wrestling game.

The Creations suite offers a plethora of options to create and customize superstars, arenas, move sets, victories, shows, and entrances. Create a title is currently missing but that is something that is promised for a future update. It is a shame that such amazing creation tools are being wasted on a poorly designed game.

The roster is large and consists of many current superstars (Raw, Smackdown, NXT) and legends from the past.

Weaknesses to note include complicated controls, and a targeting system that is hard to use. I found myself having trouble landing an attack on whoever I was targeting. The controls have been modified to make them more streamlined for first time players, but this change had the opposite effect for many players, new and old. I also noted that the models of many wrestlers look less detailed than in previous games. The skill tree for MyPlayer is overly complicated. 2K has never handled skill trees well in these modes and this game is no exception.

Universe mode hasn’t received many changes. The only notable ones are being able to book up to 13 matches for pay per views and dozens of new storyline cutscenes. This mode is in need of a complete overhaul because it lacks the depth that many players request. There isn’t any strategy involved with booking shows and there isn’t enough control over which storylines occur.

The bottom line? WWE 2K20 is more of the same with minor additions and minor regressions. With bugs scattered across the game and the clunky gameplay, it is difficult to recommend.
